Mexican top-flight league, Liga MX, is one of the leagues in North America that has been struggling to get things right especially since the coronavirus pandemic hit the world. Most clubs in Liga MX have been finding it difficult to pay players and staff salaries since the outbreak forced football to a halt.

Liga MX’s clubs like Pachuca, León, Toluca, FC Juárez and Necaxa have not paid their players since March, and such a trend is expected to last until the end of June because of the drastic drop in revenue due to the pandemic that has taken them out of business.

While clubs like América, Cruz Azul, Chivas, Pumas, Tigres and Monterrey have decided to place their players and staff on 40 to 70% pay cut in order to remain afloat while the coronavirus pandemic last. They, however, promised that they will pay the players all outstanding when the Liga MX season resumes.

However, critics of the league were let loose when the league announced the outright cancellation of the 2019-2020 Liga MX season. The league management said he had to cancel the league outrightly without declaring a winner in order to protect the football community.

Before the Liga Mx was cancelled, all the clubs in the league had played 18 matches. In those matches, Santos Laguna had gathered 37 points to top the league table. While León had gathered 32 points to occupy the second position.

Veracruz and Puebla that occupied the last two position on the league table may have nothing to worry about as Mexican football federation has suspended promotion and relegation of teams for 6 years. The decision to suspend relegation of teams from the Liga MX has attracted the attention of the world football governing body (FIFA). The football body has urged Liga MX to reverse the decision.

“The comment that FIFA made to us is that promotion and relegation have to return,” said FMF president Yon de Luisa in an interview with Marca Claro. “FIFA understands that this is temporary.”

The coming days shall tell how the Liga MX will handle the no relegation issue but before they cancelled their league, below was how the league table looked like.
