In the aftermath of yesterday’s demolition of Shakhtar Donetsk which moves Inter Milan into the final of this year’s Europa League, Lautaro Martinez believes that the team is ready for greatness. Martinez and Lukaku scored a brace apiece in the 5-0 rout. The duo has now scored 54 goals between them which are almost half of the 110 recorded by the entire team.
Martinez broke the deadlock in the first half with a wonderful header to take his season total to 20 goals in all competitions, before adding a third in the after the restart to extinguish any Shakhtar hopes of a comeback. The Argentine has been phenomenal all season so it’s no surprise to see him linked with a move to Barcelona
While giving an interview after the game, Lautaro said :
“It was an incredible night, something we have been dreaming of. We proved that Inter are ready for great things, we are ready for the final. I’m very happy with my goals because I have had a difficult period with goals. But mostly I’m happy for the team, we are growing day after day, a perfect mix of experienced players and youngsters.”
His manager who will be appearing in his first continental final was similarly delighted. In a post-match presser, Conte said: “Many of our players are facing this kind of game for the first time in their careers. Sevilla has a great experience, they have won this competition several times. But we are ready to try giving great joy to our fans. They should be proud of these guys because they are giving everything.”
Despite losing out on the Scudetto to Juventus once again, Inter can take solace from the fact they only finished a solitary point behind the Italian champions and can use that as a springboard to go again next season.
In the meantime, the best way of verifying Martinez’s claim will be in Friday’s final against the competition record winners Sevilla who will be looking for a fourth triumph in the last decade.
