Kylian Mbappe will miss PSG’s Champions League tie against Bayern Munich after sustaining a knee injury in French Ligue 1 matchday 21 clash against Montpellier.
PSG cruised to a deserved 3-1 win over Montpellier away from home to beat off the pressure from Marseille and Lens in the Ligue 1 title race.
After a barren first half, Ruiz and Lionel Messi broke the goal deadlock in the second half to put PSG ahead.
The home side pulled one back late in the game and looked to salvage a point from the Ligue 1 giants, but a stoppage-time strike by Zaire-Emery wrapped up all three points in the bag for PSG.
The win came at a very severe cost to the Ligue 1 champions. Two highly-rated stars in the attack and defense departments – Sergio Ramos and Kylian Mbappe, suffered excruciating injuries that saw them subbed off in the first half.
Both players picked up a knock in the game and PSG boss Christophe Galtier played down the fear of PSG fans after the game, saying the players were not subbed off because of the injuries.
He said Kylian Mbappe and Sergio Ramos had to be taken off due to workload from hectic and tight schedules ahead.
He, however, admitted they both picked up a knock , but was optimistic of having them back into the team claiming the injury were not severe.
In contrast to Galtier’s optimism, PSG have confirmed Kylian Mbappe will be sidelined for three weeks following the knee injury.
This means the 2022 World Cup golden boot winner will not be available for the team in a crucial Champions League tie against Bundesliga heavyweight and European giants Bayern Munich.
The France talismanic striker was subbed off after just 21 minutes into the game against Montpellier after he picked up a thigh injury. Before he was subbed off, Mbappe shocked PSG fans, missing two penalties that would have ended the first half deadlock in the game. Notwithstanding, his injury is a significant loss to PSG.
A statement on PSG’s website confirming Mbappe’s injury situation reads:
“After undergoing tests, Kylian Mbappé suffered an injury to the left thigh at the level of the femoral biceps. He is expected to be out of action for three weeks.”
PSG tackles Bayern Munich on February 14 at the French capital before taking a trip to the Allianz Arena for the return leg on March 8.
Meanwhile, PSG’s Kylian Mbappe will not only miss the crunch Champions League tie against Bayern Munich. He will miss three French Ligue 1 matches before the Champions League game.
The Ligue 1 serial champions will play Toulouse, Marseille, and Monaco before the Bayern Munich game, and the 2022 World Cup star is set to miss all the fixtures.
Kylian Mbappe has 7 Champions League goals in 6 matches for the Ligue giants this year. His injury is a big blow to the team and PSG fans will be hoping to welcome back their top striker from the injury as the club hopes to land their first European crown this season.
