Jude Bellingham was a victim of racists abuse on social media during the weekend. The 17-year-old English center-midfielder took to his Instagram story to share evidence of the racist attacks targeted at him after Borussia Dortmund‘s 2-2 draw with Cologne.
Jude Bellingham was blamed for the 2-2 draw Dortmund suffered away at Rhein Energie Stadion on Saturday, March 20, 2021. That was the 4th time this season that Dortmund drew a Bundesliga match.
The German club has so far suffered 9 defeats in 26 league games. Dortmund have only managed to record 13 wins this season which had only taken them to the 5th spot on the league table with 43 points.
Hence, the fans of Borussia Dortmund have been demanding more from the club’s players especially Jude Bellingham who joined the club from Championship side Birmingham with a lot of promise.
However, the 17-year-old youngster has managed to provide only 3 assists in 22 Bundesliga games. So far this season, the teenager has played 35 games in all competitions in which he scored a goal and provided 4 assists.
With the number of games under his belt, some desperate fans of the club were not able to hide their expectations of him and resulted in racial discrimination against him on social media.
After Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Cologne, the fans stormed his Instagram post and began to send him emojis of monkeys and feces. Some of the fans also went as far as commenting derogatory words about the mother of the footballer.
In reaction to the attack, Jude Bellingham who made his debut for England national team on November 12, 2020, shared a screenshot of the attack and tagged it “Just another day on social media…”
In Solidarity with the footballer, England tweeted: “We continue to be disgusted by the discriminatory abuse our players – and others across the game – are being subjected to online. Something needs to change. We stand with you, Bellingham Jude.”
While German Bundesliga side, Borussia Dortmund retweeted Jude Bellingham’s social media post with the caption: “We stand with you @BellinghamJude. Racism belongs nowhere.”
