Jose Mourinho Agrees Two-year Deal With Fenerbahce

Reports indicate that Jose Mourinho will be announced as manager of Fenerbahce on Friday, May 31, 2024, after agreeing a two-year deal with the club.

The Portuguese had in previous weeks been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, having reportedly held talks with Al Qadsiah over their managerial position.

Mourinho was booted out from his position at AS Roma following a woeful season that left the Serie A side ninth on the log.

He was manager of the Rome-based club for two-and-a-half years, joining the team in July 2021, about three months after being fired by Tottenham Hotspur.

Jose Mourinho led AS Roma to two sixth-place finishes in the league but galvanized to greater success in Europe.

The 61-year-old propelled the club to win the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2021, before guiding them to the Europa League final in 2023, albeit losing 4-1 on penalties to Sevilla.

Fenerbahce Lost The Turkish Süper Lig Title By Minimal Margins

Fenerbahce ended the 2023/24 league season in 2nd position with 99 points, 3 points adrift of eventual Turkish Süper Lig winners and rivals Galatasaray, who clinched the title with 102 points.

Mourinho replaces 62-year-old Ismail Kartal, who exited the Yellow Canaries at the end of the season, having penned a one-year deal with the club in June 2023.

Kartal’s recent stint with Fenerbahce was his time handling the side, having previously been manager of the team between August 2014 – May 2015 and January 2022 – May 2022.

Moreover, Jose Mourinho is set for management in a 5th country, having in the past worked in Portugal, England, Italy, and Spain.

He is also on the verge of taking charge of the 10th club in his managerial career, having previously coached Benfica, Uniao de Leiria, Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and recently AS Roma.

It will be interesting to see how he fares in the Southeastern European country, with the aim for Fenerbahce in the 2024/25 season being the Turkish Süper Lig title.

Mourinho, dubbed “the Special One” by the British media, is one of the most decorated managers ever and he is widely considered to be among the greatest managers of all time.

Jose Mourinho was born in Setubal, Portugal, on January 26, 1963, and he has won several trophies in his managerial career, including; 2 UEFA Champions League, 2 UEFA Europa League, and 8 League titles (1 La Liga, 2 Serie A, 3 Premier Leagues, and 2 Portuguese Primeira Liga).

Mourinho became the first manager to win all major European club competitions when he led Roma to the UEFA Europa Conference League title in 2022.
