England national team manager Gareth has unveiled the highly-anticipated England provisional squad for the 2024 Euros.
The Three Lions will kick off their 2024 Euro campaign on June 16 against Serbia in Group C before playing Denmark and Slovenia for a place in the knockouts.
After a near-miss in the last edition of the tournament in 2020, Southgate will be expected to steer the Three Lions to triumph in Germany.
Hence, the English football veteran has not spared axing players who are not at their best from the squad as he prepares for the task ahead.
Southgate’s 31-man list for the tournament is out with some big-name players dropped from the squad. Leading the list of major exclusions from the squad is Jordan Henderson.
Henderson’s chances in the Three Lions squad got slimmer after he completed an infamous transfer move to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia last summer.
He penned down a rollercoaster £700,000-a-week three-year contract with the club but was forced to terminate the deal after just five months to safeguard his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
After terminating the contract, he returned to Europe where he signed with Eredivisie giants Ajax. However, his European return has not been enough to save his international career. His struggles for game time with Ajax has apparently necessitated his removal from the provisional Euros squad.
Marcus Rashford is another big name that has been axed out of the squad. Rashford was certainly set to face a tough task breaking into Southgate’s squad for Euros following his struggles with Manchester United this season
Chelsea duo Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell have also been left out of the squad following their underwhelming performances for the Blues.
Kalvin Philips is another out-of-favor star that has been left out of the squad. Philips has trudged a difficult chapter in his career since he returned from the 2022 World Cup. He was frozen up on the Manchester City bench before being loaned to West Ham United where he has struggled to breathe life back into his career.
Chelsea star Reece James has also been frozen out of the squad after a niggling injury crisis that reduced his minutes for Chelsea in the just-concluded campaign. James starred on his return for the Blues at the end of the campaign but it was not enough to secure him a slot in Southgate’s squad.
Other names left out of the squad are Manchester United loanee to Borussia Dortmund Jadon Sancho and Newcastle United’s Nick Pope.
