Manchester United have agreed on a £73 million deal with Borussia Dortmund for the services of Jadon Sancho. The chief executive of Borussia Dortmund Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed the deal on Wednesday, June 30.
The chief executive of the German Bundesliga side said the club and Manchester United agreed on General terms. He revealed that the aspects of the deal that were yet to be completed were details of the contract and medicals.
Watzke said: “We reached a general agreement with Manchester United on the transfer of Jadon Sancho, pending full completion, as there are still some formalities to agree on and the medical check to be completed.”
However, an announcement from Dortmund on Thursday morning, July 1, 2021, confirmed that Jadon Sancho has agreed on personal terms with Manchester United which means that the transfer deal is 87 percent completed.
The only aspect of the contract that is left to be completed is the aspect of medicals. Once Sancho completes his medicals with Manchester United, he would become the player of the club ahead of the 2021-2022 season.
But Manchester United have to wait until the ongoing Euro 2020 is over on July 11 before the 21-year-old winger will visit Manchester for the final part of the deal.
A statement announcing the deal read: “The player Jadon Sancho is about to move from Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA to Manchester United Football Club Limited.
“Both clubs and the player reached an agreement on this today. If the transfer is realized, Manchester United will pay BVB a fixed transfer fee of EUR 85.0 million.
“The contractual details now have to be coordinated and documented. The formal processing of the transfer is also subject to the successful completion of all necessary medical tests and examinations, a coordination procedure with the player’s previous club, and the proper and timely processing by the provisions of the FIFA Transfer Matching System.”
Jadon Sancho and his rise to fame
Jadon Sancho started his football journey at Watford’s youth team before he joined Manchester City’s youth team in 2015. He gained promotion to City’s senior team on July 1, 2016.
However, he was not able to break into the Manchester City squad under Pep Guardiola. Hence, he agreed to leave the Premier League side to join Borussia Dortmund on August 31, 2017, for a transfer fee worth €7.84 million.
Between 2017 and 2021, he became one of the most prominent players at Borussia Dortmund. He scored a total number of 50 goals in 137 appearances for the German side.
His form at the club won him an invitation to the Three Lions of England. Jadon Sancho made his debut for the national team on October 12, 2018. Since then, he has made 20 appearances in which he scored a goal.
Once his deal with Manchester United is completed, his former club, Manchester City, will earn a whopping £11.2 million from the transfer process. It is a cut from the £72.9 million that Manchester United have agreed to pay for the 21-year-old forward.
