Goals Bash In Merseyside As Liverpool Dent Tottenham Hotspur’s Top-4 Hopes With Smashing Win At Anfield

Liverpool were gallant at Anfield, and they displayed their superiority over Tottenham Hotspur menacingly.

Mohamed Salah poked the Reds ahead in the 16th minute after Wataru Endo had sent the ball out wide to Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo moved inside onto his right foot before floating a cross towards the back post.

Salah was rightly positioned to head home for the Reds, with Guglielmo Vicario putting a hand to it, however, he couldn’t stop the effort from ending in the back of the net.

Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t trouble Liverpool for large spells in the game despite bossing the game at different moments

Despite hugging possession across spells in the affair, Ange Postecoglou’s side were watery on the day.

Pape Sarr was booked in the 43rd minute for delaying a restart of action after Liverpool were awarded a free-kick.

Two minutes later, Andrew Robertson doubled the lead for the Reds, after Alexis Mac Allister had played a one-time pass out wide to Alexander Arnold.

Arnold delivered the ball towards the back post, with Robertson striking the ball into the direction of Salah, who instantly aimed the ball at goal.

However, Guglielmo Vicario made a swashbuckling save, with the ball landing straight at the feet of Andrew Robertson, who tapped the ball into an empty net.

The Reds were delighted by the showing in the opening half

Liverpool went into the break cruising, following their impressive outing in the opening 45.

The second period offered Jurgen Klopp’s side more bliss, as they doubled the scoreline, through goals from Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott in the 50th and 59th minute respectively.

Luis Diaz sent the ball to Salah, who lost it to Emerson Royal, with the Spurs handing Liverpool a gift, as Elliot dispossessed him of the ball.

Harvey Elliott took his time anticipating for some of his teammates to arrive into the area, before sending the ball towards the back post, with Gakpo rising the highest to increase the lead for Liverpool.

Spurs Micky van de Ven had initially been booked in the 47th minute, while Emerson Royal was also handed a yellow in the 57th minute, halting a counter-attacking move by Liverpool.

Oliver Skipp also entered the fray for Spurs, coming on for Emerson Royal, who had a hand in the 3rd goal scored by Liverpool.

In the 63rd minute, Yves Bissouma also got his name taken down into the referee’s book, after he punched the ball away in frustration, much to the dismay of the referee.

Liverpool made two changes in the 64th minute with Stefan Bajcetic and Joseph Gomez entering the fray for Wataru Endo and Andrew Robertson.

Spurs looked to have found their mojo late, just like they did against Arsenal scoring two late goals, but couldn’t ultimately secure a comeback win.

In the 73rd minute, Richarlison pulled one back for the visitors, following an intricate attacking move with Brennan Johnson.

Jurgen Klopp made two further substitutions in the 75th minute with Ryan Gravenberch coming on for Alexis Mac Allister, while Darwin Nunez replaced Luis Diaz.

Spurs boss Postecoglou also made another reinforcement, with Giovanni Lo Celso coming on for Pape Sarr.

Two minutes later, Tottenham Hotspur halved their deficit in the game, as Heung-Min Son struck a decisive attempt into the back of the net after Richarlison had laid a beautiful pass into his path.

Tottenham Hotspur record 4th consecutive league defeat following loss to Liverpool

Unfortunately, Spurs recorded their 4th league defeat in a row, with their capitulation coming to the fore at the dying embers of the campaign.

In the 83rd minute, Dominik Szoboszlai was also introduced for Liverpool, replacing Harvey Elliott.

Despite 7 minutes of added time, Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t find their way back.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold was booked in the 2nd minute of stoppage time for delaying the restart of play, after Liverpool was handed a throw-in.

The win sees the Reds remain third on the log, with 78 points from 36 league matches, with an outside chance of winning the Premier League title.

Arsenal still occupy the summit of the log with 83 points from 36 matches, one point better than Manchester City (82), who have played one game less.

Tottenham Hotspur sit 5th on the table with 60 points from 35 league matches also with an outside chance of securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season.

They are 7 points adrift of Aston Villa, who sit 4th on the table, with 67 points from 36 league games.

It will be interesting to see how the season culminates, with Tottenham Hotspur having Manchester City still to play in one of the last 3 league matches.
