Georginio Wijnaldum is still putting Liverpool in the dark over his future at the club with just 6 months left on his contract with the reigning Premier League champions.

Liverpool have reportedly placed a contract extension on the table for the 30-year-old Dutch center-forward but Georginio Wijnaldum has consistently requested for more time while he continues to ponder accepting or rejecting the contract extension.

The coach of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp wants to see the Netherlands international continue to play for the Merseyside club but Wijnaldum seemed to be having a second thought on staying put at Liverpool.

He has reportedly promised Liverpool that he would inform the club ahead before he opens any transfer talks with any other club. And the most likely club he might want to discuss with could be FC Barcelona.

Since Ronald Koeman became the coach of FC Barcelona before the commencement of the 2020-2021 season, the coach has always wanted to bring Georginio Wijnaldum to the Spanish club. The 57-year-old Dutch tactician has been very interested in his countryman who he can not get enough of after working with him for two years.

Recall that Ronald Koeman served as the head coach of the Netherlands national team between 2018 and 2020 before he joined FC Barcelona. During that period, Georginio Wijnaldum was his go-to person when it comes to midfield duties.

With the 30-year-old center-midfielder in the heart of Koeman’s midfield, while heading the national team, Netherlands played in the final of the 2019 UEFA Nations League but lost it to Portugal.

According to a report by the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Ronald Koeman plans to pair Wijnaldum with Frenkie de Jong in midfield just like how it is in Netherlands national team.

Though the Netherlands international was Jurgen Klopp’s number one midfielder during the 2019-2020 Premier League-winning season, the coach had to sign Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcântara from Bayern Munich as what some pundits believe was a backup plan for Wijnaldum.

As it stands, one can only wait for the January transfer window since the Dutchman is free to start discussing with other clubs from January 1. If he fails to get another club and fails to extend his contract with Liverpool, he would become a free agent at the end of the 2020-2021 season.

Georginio Wijnaldum has been at Liverpool since July 2016. He joined the club from Newcastle United for €27.50 million. Since then, he has made 208 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 20 goals and providing 16 assists. His current market value is €40 million.
