The manager of Chelsea football club, Frank Lampard is on the verge of spending over £290 million in the transfer market this summer amid the coronavirus pandemic that has hugely affected the revenue of clubs across Europe.
The manager who could not bring in any football star prior to the 2019-2020 season because the club was banned by UEFA for breaching the financial fair play rules, is not ready to give any chances this summer. He has gone all the way to ensure that he is able to get the best players money can buy in the transfer market.
The first big-name he landed was Hakim Ziyech from Ajax for a transfer fee worth £33.3 million. The club gave the 26-year-old attacking midfielder a five-year deal which would see him remain at the club until 2025.
Afterward, Frank Lampard landed another big name signing, Timo Werner. This time around, it was all the way from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. Chelsea bought the 24-year-old German striker who scored a whopping 28 goals for Leipzig in the just concluded 2019-2020 season, for £47.5 million. The superstar striker will reportedly earn £170,000 per week until 2025 when his current contract with the Blues is expected to expire.
The next big name Frank Lampard landed was Ben Chilwell from Leicester City. The transaction that brought the English defender to Chelsea was very dramatic because Leicester wanted £80 million initially but Chelsea was able to bargain it down to £50 million. He is expected to remain at the club for five years.
How much has Frank Lampard spent in the transfer market so far?
From the deals mentioned above, Frank Lampard has spent a whopping £130 million on three players alone. Yet, he is still looking forward to landing more players before the Premier League season commences on September 12.
One of the players the former England and Chelsea midfielder want to sign is 21-year-old Declan Rice. The West Ham midfielder was earlier worth £65million but now, West Ham can only let him go for £80 million.
Besides him, Frank Lampard is still striving to bring 21-year-old Germany forward Kai Havertz to Stamford Bridge. The Bayer Leverkusen star would cost Chelsea €80 million, which can rise to €100 million due to add-ons.
Hence, Lampard would have spent over £290 million if he is able to land all the deals mentioned above. With such an expenditure, there would be little or no excuse for him if he fails to meet the expectation of the owner of the club, Roman Abramovich, in the forthcoming 2020-2021 season.
Recall that he has also signed Malang Sarr and former Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva as free transfers.
