Former Nigeria U-17 Star, Akinkunmi Amoo, To Face Trial in Danish Court For Rape Allegations

    Former Nigeria youth team player, Akinkunmi Amoo, will face trial in Danish Court to clear his name on rape allegations.

    A report made available by a top Nigeria sports journalist, Osasi Obayiuwana confirmed all is now set for the Nigeria youth team player to face the court of law in Denmark following rape allegations.

    The report adds the Nigeria youngster is currently in his homeland in Nigeria, having traveled into the country from Denmark.

    However, his travel is reportedly not related to his impending trial that is expected to take place on June 23, 2023.

    It has been confirmed he undertook the travel from Belgium to Nigeria after his club, FC Copenhagen gave him the nod to do so.

    The approval was necessary after the club confirmed Amoo suffered a knee injury and had to be granted the approval to travel to receive medical attention and support from his family.

    Amoo is now slowly recovering after joining his family from Belgium, according to reports.

    He is training with Nigeria U-20 youth team in the country’s capital, Abuja, to recover fully and return to action with FC Copenhagen next season.

    Akinkunmi Amoo was reportedly arrested by Danish authorities on September 10, 2022 after he was accused of rape and two other crimes which are yet to be clarified.

    After his arrest, he was granted bail on October, 2022 but will now have reappear in court for trial on June 23, 2023.

    He will stand trial for the said allegations which is a criminal offence in the Danish law. While the victim of the said rape is yet to make any public statement on the case, Danish authorities have taken over the case and were the ones who slammed Akinkunmi Amoo with charges on July and August, 2022 before his arrest in September, and bail on October, 2022.

    Danish media reports that if Amoo is found guilty, he risks jail sentence or a hefty fine according to Danish law and the duration of the sentence and fine will be dependent on the gravity of the committed offense as the prosecutors will put it before the Jurists.

    Akinkunmi Amoo, 20, was one of the best young talents Nigeria produced in the 2019 U-17 World Cup. He raised the bar in the tournament against his peers with his creativity, speed, strength and great dribbling skills, playing as a winger.

    After the tournament, Akinkunmi Amoo landed a deal with a European club due to his standout performance in the team.

    Akinkunmi Amoo was named by former Super Eagles head coach Austin Eguavoen in the Nigeria Super Eagles 2022 World Cup qualifiers squad that tackled Ghana in March, 2022 but was unused on the Super Eagles bench in the game.

    After 2019 U-17 AFCON, Amoo joined Swedish side Hammarby in 2020. He won the Swedish first-tier trophy, Allsvenskan, in his debut season.

    In his two-year spell with Hammarby, he made 46 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals.

    Akinkunmi Amoo joined FC Copenhagen in 2022 in a club record transfer of €4.4m, signing a four-year contract that will extend his stay till 2026.

    He has made just two apearances for the club after picking up a knee injury on September and the club confirmed he will be ruled out of the rest of the season due to the injury.

    Akinkunmi made 10 appearances for the Nigeria U-17 side, scoring one goal.
