Chloe Kelly made sure she is always remembered as a Lionesses legend as she helped England win a historic game in extra time in front of record-breaking spectators at Wembley Stadium in London.

The hosts had taken the lead thanks to a beautifully executed lob by Ella Toone, but Lina Magull’s equalizer forced an additional 30 minutes.

The number of attendees broke the previous attendance record set at the men’s tournament in 1964, when 79,115 people watched Spain play the Soviet Union in the championship match at Santiago Bernabeu.

The opening match between England and Austria at Old Trafford attracted a crowd of 68,781, making it the second time this summer alone that the Women’s European Championship attendance record has been beaten.

Before the final, the 2022 edition of the tournament recorded 487,683 spectators, which was more than twice the previous attendance record for the women’s competition established five years prior when the Netherlands successfully hosted Euro 2017.

When the final attendance is taken into account, Euro 2022 surpasses the 574,000 record for the overall number of spectators who attended games during the tournament.

The 91,648 spectators that watched Barcelona play Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal match at Camp Nou in April 2022 still hold the record for the largest crowd ever to watch a women’s football game.
