Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is set to miss the rest of the season for Chelsea because of a groin issue.
The highly-rated midfielder decided to go under the knife after consultation with medics to address a groin injury.
Argentina outlet Ole reveals the midfielder has been carrying the groin issue for over a month before deciding to go for a surgical operation.
Sources close to Chelsea reveal the club had wanted to proffer a non-abrasive solution to the problem which would have allowed the World Cup winner to continue with action while recovering from the problem but the player opted for a full surgical operation after speaking with his Argentinian doctors.
With four games left to the end of the season, he is now expected to miss the rest of the action but will recover for 2024 Copa America which will kick off in June 2024.
Enzo has played two of Chelsea’s last three games. He played in the Blues’ FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City and was in action in the 5-0 defeat to Arsenal.
Fernandez joined the Blues on a record £107m transfer fee from Benfica in January 2023. He has made 57 competition appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 5 goals with 4 assists.
His imminent surgery means Chelsea fans have seen the last of the player this season in the 5-0 loss Arsenal with the Argentine preparing for 2024 Copa America.
Enzo Fernandez has not had a groundbreaking start to life with the Blues. Chelsea are set to miss out on Champions League football for two consecutive seasons since he joined the club.
However, he has been cut some slacks for his not-so-stellar campaign due to the club’s overall dwindling fortunes.
Meanwhile, the Blues are in contention for the Europa League or Conference League football next season and will miss the midfielder in the remaining four matches for the season.
Moises Caicedo is expected to take a more central role in the Blues’ midfield, replacing the Argentine in the last batch of games.
