Douglas Luiz, a midfielder for Aston Villa, has signed a new deal that the team refers to as “long-term,” albeit the duration of it has not been made public.
Arsenal’s chances of signing Douglas Luiz have been dashed now that the midfielder has signed a new contract with Aston Villa.
The 24-year-old Luiz joined the Premier League team in 2019 after moving there for £15 million from Manchester City.
He has 120 appearances for Villa, has nine Brazil caps, and has scored seven goals and provided eight assists.
However, Luiz’s contract was about to expire, and Arsenal made him two proposals during the summer transfer window. Arsenal were hoping to complete a deal before the transfer deadline but had a second offer of £23 million rejected.
Recall that Luiz and his nation took home the Olympic gold in Tokyo last year.
The Gunners have been interested in the Brazilian transfer for a while, and on deadline day, they made at least two approaches to sign him.
Despite being aware that Douglas would become a free agent at the end of this campaign, Villa refused the offers.
The Midlands team had hoped he would not extend his contract with them, allowing Arsenal to sign him for nothing in the summer.
But that scheme may now be abandoned as Steven Gerrard’s team revealed via their Twitter account that he has signed a new, long-term contract.
Douglas stated the following on Villa’s official website: “I’m so happy. I love this club, love the people, staff and the players.”
“I’m so comfortable here and I’m so happy.”
“I love this club. This club opened the door for me when I came to England to play in the Premier League,” he added.
“I’m so happy because I’m staying here and my choice is here.”
Douglas Luiz
Douglas Luiz Soares de Paulo, also known as Douglas Luiz, is a Brazilian professional football player who competes for both the Brazil national team and Premier League club Aston Villa as a defensive midfielder. He was born on May 9, 1998.
Douglas Luiz is a graduate of Rio de Janeiro’s Vasco da Gama academy. He was recruited by Manchester City in 2017 when he was 19 years old, but owing to issues with his work permit, he never participated in a competitive match as a member of the club. Instead, he was twice loaned out to Girona of La Liga.
Luiz was acquired by Aston Villa in July 2019. He won the gold medal in the men’s football final of the 2020 Summer Olympics, making him an Olympic champion.
On July 25, 2019, Douglas Luiz agreed to join Aston Villa under the condition of a work permit. On August 7, his work permit was approved, and he was admittedly a member of the Aston Villa team.
In Aston Villa’s 2-1 loss to AFC Bournemouth on August 17, Douglas Luiz scored his first goal for the team.
In the third round of the 2022–23 EFL Cup, Luiz scored straight from a corner. The following week, against Arsenal in the Premier League, he replicated the feat.
Douglas Luiz is currently dating Alisha Lehmann, a female football star who currently plays for Aston Villa Women team.
