Following his 17th clean sheet of the season, David De Gea has won the 2022/23 Premier League Golden Glove award.
The Spaniard was once again in goal as Manchester United defeated Bournemouth at the vitality stadium by 0-1 courtesy of an astonishing goal scored by Casemiro.
However, some fans think two of his teammates deserve the award instead of David De Gea.
The 32-year-old closest challenger for the gong was Liverpool’s Allison Becker but the Reds No 1 conceded in his side’s frustrating draw at Anfield against Aston Villa.
This therefore means that the Brazilian can only garner 14 clean sheets with only one encounter left for the Merseyside based club.
Manchester United presently can beat their chest to having the joint-third best defense this campaign.
The Old Trafford club have shipped in just 41 goals in the English Premier League this campaign.
The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper receiving the award comes as a shocker for many following several howlers, with the veteran rumored to be on his way out of the side when his deal ends in the summer.
His recent error came in Manchester United’s loss at West Ham United, with David De Gea’s mistake giving the London side the win.
The three-time Sir Matt Busby player of the year winner was also manning the post for some embarrassing defeats this campaign.
He was in goal when Manchester United lost 4-0 to Brentford earlier in the season and a 7-0 humiliating loss to Liverpool.
Due to such notable mistakes, some purist believe the Golden Glove award should have been handed to two of De Gea’s teammates.
Both players don’t play in goal, however, fans think the duo of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have been solid in defense this campaign.
Fans believe they are the actual reason behind the clean sheets recorded by David De Gea this campaign.
A fan stated: “De Gea’s Golden Glove is thanks to Martinez and Varane, not his shot-stopping ability.”
Another said: “If you think Martinez and Varane are bad defenders, you haven’t got a clue.
“De Gea has the Golden Glove because of those two and Casemiro not because he’s the best keeper in the league.”
A football supporter added: “At home our defensive record is one of the best and it’s the reason De Gea has won the Golden Glove.
“Don’t tell me Varane hasn’t improved the team because he 100 per cent has.”
Apparently, it looks like David De Gea is in agreement with the thoughts and sentiments of the fans.
Following Manchester United’s win over Bournemouth, De Gea said: “The Golden Glove is not just about me.
“We have been solid this season.”
