Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has revealed why he deleted all Liverpool-related posts on his Instagram late into the just-concluded 2023/24 Premier League campaign.
After Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on May 5, Liverpool fans awoke to a surprise on Nunez’s Instagram. The former Benfica forward purged his Instagram of all Liverpool-related posts, fueling speculations on his future at the club.
There were reports he could leave the club this summer as his decision to wipe off Liverpool posts from the page pointed to his frustrations at the club lately.
Before the shocking move on his Instagram, Nunez endured a difficult end-of-the-season campaign with Liverpool under former manager Jurgen Klopp.
He was axed off the Reds’ starting lineup and usually cut a frustrated figure on the bench. The drastic upturn in his Liverpool fortunes contrasted with his bright start to the campaign after what was a disappointing debut season.
Despite his late slack in form which coincided with Liverpool’s late capitulation in the campaign, Darwin Nunez’s second season with the Reds was fairly better. He tallied 11 Premier League goals with 8 assists in 36 appearances.
However, he was constantly targeted by jeering fans for his late no-show for Liverpool.
Speaking with ESPN, Nunez revealed he deleted all Liverpool posts on his Instagram due to the negative comments and attacks.
“From the moment you start playing and until you retire, there will always be someone who will criticise you.
“Whoever says that those negative comments do not affect them is lying, those negative comments that are directed towards you will always affect you.
”They tell me everything, but I ignore those comments because they are of no use to me. I never look at the negative comments on social media, at least now I’m not looking at anything, not even the good stuff. If a game goes badly for me, I rely on my family
”When things go badly for me, I get hot, but I try to laugh with my family and not show my son the anger I have, what happened in the game is already there, it’s already happened, and there is always revenge.”
Darwin Nunez is expected a big role as Liverpool prepare for a new chapter with new manager Arne Slot. Sources close to the new helmsman in the Reds’ dugout reveal he is a big admirer of Darwin and is ready to work with the player.
