Anthony Taylor Controversies In the Premier League
The Premier League referee, Anthony Taylor, was well known for his controversies over the years, which had reduced the referee rating among other referees in the English top-flight league and other competitions.
In the 2023-24 season, Taylor awarded a penalty to Newcastle in the match against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League after Hwang Hee-chan tripped Fabian Schar in the 18-yard box while trying to clear the ball.
This prompted Wolves manager Gary O’Neil to call the penalty “disgraceful.” The referee was forced to apologize for his wrong decision.
The PGMOL went ahead to punish Taylor by pushing him down to the championship for officiating duties.
In the Euro 2024 match between Germany and Spain, the Spanish fans criticized Taylor for failing to send off former Germany international Toni Kroos, whose tackle sent Pedri out of the game.
In the Chelsea match against Bournemouth in the Premier League, Taylor issued 15 yellow cards in the game, which attracted a lot of discussions over the referee’s bad officiating.
He was criticized for not punishing Marc Cucurella for a handball in the game.
