Anthony Taylor had been demoted to the Championship after awarding Newcastle a controversial penalty against Wolves.

Anthony Taylor will be in charge of the match between Preston and Coventry on November 4, 2023.

This is Anthony Taylor’s first officiating in the championship since 2019.

Taylor was under fire from a different platform after he gave Newcastle a penalty in the first half of the match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Magpies.

He pointed to the penalty spot after Hwang Hee-Chan brought down Fabian Schar while he was attempting to clear off the ball.

Anthony Taylor’s decision was approved by the VAR after a long check. After the game, Wolverhampton Wanderers made sure they secured a point against Newcastle despite going behind in the first half.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil, who had seen two decisions go against them in a match against Manchester United and also against Luton Town, called Anthony Taylor scandalous.

He said, “The second goal was never a penalty, ever. It was a terrible decision on-field and from VAR, but we managed to bounce back.”

The Wolverhampton Wanderers player, Hwang, who scored the equalizer against Newcastle, said he was not happy about the incident and revealed he was saddened by Anthony Taylor’s decision.

After the game, Hwang said, ‘I’d tried to clear the ball and saw someone block me. I stopped, and he touched me. I don’t think it was a penalty,’ he said.

‘I felt so sad and really wanted to do something for my team. Everybody said, ‘You can do it. They gave me trust, and I scored.’

Referees Who Were Demoted to the Championship After Bad Decisions

In 2017, Mike Dean got demoted to the Championship after giving a penalty for a handball outside the box against Barnsley and Leeds United.

On October 25, 2017, another referee named Steven McLean was demoted after his horrible decision in a match between Rangers and Motherwell.

Andrian Holmes was sent to the Championship after he made a decision not to allow Luis Diaz’s goal to stand against Tottenham in the Premier League.

Can a referee change his decision in football?

A referee like Anthony Taylor who makes the final decisions is allowed to correct them. According to Law 5 of the FA, decisions are made to the best ability of the referees.

The decisions of the referee and other officials should be respected by football clubs and their players.

If a wrong decision is made, the referee like Anthony Taylor is allowed to restart the game in order to correct his decision upon the completion of the first half or the second half of the match.

However, if other officials fail to communicate with the referee for example Taylor about a wrong decision before the restart of the match, the complaint wouldn’t be sanctioned.
