Chelsea have officially announced the signing of Marc Cucurella from Brighton, on a 6-year-contract. Marc Cucurella’s transfer, orchestrated by Chelsea interim sporting director and owner Todd Boehly, is Chelsea’s 5th signing in the 2022 summer transfer window. He is a second defender after Kalidou Koulibaly to join the Blues this summer.

After the exit of Christensen and Anthony Rudiger, the Blues defensive line-up is gradually taking shape. Yesterday, highly-revered captain and oldest player in the squad, Cesar Azpilicueta signed a new contract with the club to the satisfaction and expectation of new owner Todd Boehly.

Marc Cucurella is joining the Blues on a six-year contract which will see him stay at the club until 2028. The Blues paid Brighton a guaranteed sum of £55m, including add-ons of £7m. The amount is a record fee for a left-back in the Premier League.

Brighton pegged the price of Marc Cucurella at £50m. Premier League rivals Manchester City were on the trail of the 24-year-old Spaniard but pegged down the player’s value to £40m, which Brighton rejected. A more desperate Todd Boehly was ready to roll out the funds for the player.

On the other hand, Brighton has acquired Chelsea defender Lewi Colwill on a loan deal without a buy option. It is unclear whether Colwin’s loan deal to Brighton was part of the deal to allow Marc Cucurella to join the Blues. It is believed that the Seagull’s denial tactics were a way of bargaining their way to have Colwill join the club.

Chelsea can be considered hijackers of the Cucurella deal, but not Manchester City. The Citizens indicated interest but showed less optimism about meeting Brighton’s demand for £50m. Todd Boehly entered the race and hijacked the deal with the force of a whirlwind.

Cucurella was enthusiastic about playing for any of the big clubs in England. Despite Brighton rejecting the offer of their wealthy suitors Manchester City, Cucurella hands in a transfer request to the Seagulls trying to push for a move. Chelsea was a great alternative after the Citizens failed to meet Brighton’s demand.

Hence, Cucurella will be flying the Blue colors at Stamford Bridge next season.

A top and a prime target for big clubs in England; who is Marc Cucurella? He started his football career with the youth team of Espanyol in 2006.

His stint with Espanyol ended in 2012 when he joined Barcelona. Breaking into the Blaugrana first team was difficult for the youngster. He played mainly for the youth team between 2012 to 2019.

He was called into the first team in 2018 but was always benched and used as a substitute. Cucurella went on a loan spell to Eibar and Getafe between 2018 and 2020.

In 2019, Getafe signed Cucurella permanently. He spent a season with the Spanish side before joining Brighton in a deal worth £15m. Cucurella played 35 matches for the seagull scoring one goal before a switch to Stamford Bridge.
