Brighton took to their official social media account to write: “We are delighted to announce that the club has agreed to sign midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud for undisclosed terms.”

Mahmoud Dahoud, 27, will join the Seagulls on 1 July, after his current contract with Borussia Dortmund expires, on a four-year contract to June 2027.

Roberto De Zerbi, head coach of the EPL side said: “I’m excited to have Mahmoud in my team. I wanted him when I was at Sassuolo and I’m sure he is going to be a top player for us.”

This is Brighton’s third signing after they landed James Milner and Joao Pedro from Liverpool and Watford respectively.

The move by De Zerbi is in preparation for next season’s Europa competition after he led Brighton to finish 6th place in the Premier League.

In 2010, Mahmoud became the first Syrian-born player in the Bundesliga after joining Borussia Moenchengladbach as a 14-year-old.

David Weir, Brighton’s technical director, said, “We’re delighted to bring Mahmoud to the club, his quality and ability will really add to the options available to Roberto.”

“He’s a quality player, he’s got lots of experience playing at a high level in Germany with great experience in Europe too.”

“We’re looking forward to working with Mahmoud when pre-season starts next month and to seeing him in action in the Summer Series in the United States in July.”

After making his debut, he helped Gladbach qualify for the Champions League before moving to Dortmund in 2017.

In his spell with the club, the player made 86 appearances for the club before signing for Dortmund three years later.

Mahmoud Dahoud later went on to make 141 appearances for this season’s Bundesliga runners-up, although his game time was restricted after he had surgery on his shoulder last summer.

Though he was born in Syria, Dahoud has represented Germany internationally at U18, U19, and U21 level.

He was also part of the U21 side which won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2017.

Mahmoud also played 26 times for Germany’s under-21s, and he has won two senior caps and made his international debut against Turkey in 2020.
