Bayern Munich are through to the UEFA Champions League final for the first time since 2013 after defeating French Ligue 1 side Lyon 3-0 on Wednesday night.
The semi-final win of the German Bundesliga champions at the Estadio Jose Alvalade has given them the ticket to face another French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint Germain in the final on Sunday, 23 August 2020.
How Bayern Munich knocked out stubborn Lyon
Lyon has been termed the giants’ slayer in the competition especially after knocking out Italian Serie A champions Juventus in the round of 16 and Premier League second-placed team Manchester City led by Pep Guardiola in the quarter-finals round of the competition.
The semi-final meeting between Bayern Munich and Lyon was seen as the meeting of a giant and a giants’ slayer, fortunately for the German giants, they were able to slay the French club.
The onslaught started immediately after the 17th minute of the first half when Bayern’s Serge Gnabry decided to try Lyon’s goalkeeper Anthony Lopes outside the 20 yards box and the goalkeeper didn’t have an answer to it. The thunderbolt made it 1-0 in the 18th minute of the match.
Immediately Bayern Munich took the lead, they also took control of the match and it was not up to 12 minutes after the first goal that Robert Lewandowski passed the ball into the eighteen-yard box. The ball found Gnabry who did not hesitate to tap it into the net in the 33rd minute to make it 2-0.
Lyon tried to fight back and also defended their lines in order to avoid the total Annihilation Barcelona suffered in the hands of the German club by knocking them out in the quarter-finals stage of the competition with an 8-2 defeat. Hence, Lyon was able to maintain the 2 goals deficit until the end of the first half.
The second half kicked off with Lyon showing a couple of brilliance but all their efforts were not enough to make them see Bayern’s back of the net. The struggle continued until the 88th minute when Robert Lewandowski stepped up his game and scored in the 9th consecutive matches in the 2019-2020 Champions League campaign.
The match which ended 3-0 was Bayern Munich’s 9th conservative win in the 2019-2020 UEFA Champions League campaign. If they triumph over PSG on Sunday, it will mean that they won the prestigious European competition without dropping a single point.

From Robert Lewandowski point of View
Robert Lewandowski has been on a rampage throughout the 2019-2020 season. He won the Bundesliga top scorer after ending the season with 34 goals. He is currently on the verge of being the UEFA Champions League top scorer as he is on 15 goals.
The only player that is close to the number of goals he has scored so far in the 2019-2020 Champions League campaign is Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Håland who has scored 10 goals but he is no longer in the competition.
Besides the top scorer award, Robert Lewandowski is on the verge of breaking Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record of scoring 17 goals in a single UEFA Champions League campaign. The Portuguese football icon achieved this feat while playing for Real Madrid in the 2013-2014 UEFA Champions League season.
More so, Lewandowski has successfully matched Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in 9 consecutive Champions League matches with his goal against Lyon on Wednesday night. If he scores on Sunday, it will make it the 10th consecutive Champions League match that he has scored a goal.
