Manchester United right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been banned from driving for six months and fined £31,500 for driving without insurance and while disqualified.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been having issues with police over his driving style. His legal battles started when he was charged for over-speeding over two years ago.
The English right-back committed two speeding offenses in Bradford in September 2020, over a year after he joined Manchester United from Crystal Palace on July 1, 2019, for a transfer fee worth €55 million.
Before then, he has been convicted for speeding offenses in April 2020, which placed six points on his license.
While he was busy with his football career, the legal battles continued and notifications about the legal procedures were sent to his old address in Croydon, London.
The footballer changed his address after he secured a move to Manchester United and did not update his information with the appropriate agency.
Hence, all the letters the court sent to him, went to his old address which did not give him the opportunity of responding to the letters.
When the court failed to get feedback from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the court had to ban the footballer from driving for six-months on June 18, 2021, in his absence.
Unfortunately for the footballer, the Manchester United star was not aware that a Magistrates’ Court sitting in the city of Leeds have banned him from driving.
It was five days after the ban that the police arrested Aaron Wan-Bissaka while driving his Lamborghini Urus on A34 in the city of Manchester. He was then charged for driving without insurance and while disqualified.
Before the commencement of the trial, the footballer agreed that he failed to provide his driver details. And his lawyer, Shaun Draycott, told the court during the hearing that the notifications that the court sent to the player went to his former address.
In the lawyer’s argument, the 24-year-old football star acted in “complete ignorance” because he did not receive the letters the court sent to him.
“When he was stopped on the A34 he was courteous and respectful to the officers, and he indicated to them he had no idea he was disqualified”, the lawyer told the court.
He however confirmed that his client failed to update the necessary authorities of his change of address after he left Crystal Palace for Manchester United in 2019.
On the part of the magistrate court, District Judge Bernard Begley said the court would have sent at least six letters to the footballer’s former address.
While admitting that Aaron Wan-Bissaka was not aware of his ban on June 23, 2021, the judge added: “Whether it was wise for you in the circumstances to delegate the tasks about moving from the London address to Manchester is a matter you will have to reflect upon.”
Hence, Wan-Bissaka would have to pay £30,000 for driving while disqualified, and fines totaling £1,500 for failing to give information on the speeding offenses he committed in 2020.
