The head coach of Three Lions of England, Gareth Southgate has named Crystal Palace forward, Eberechi Eze, and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka in his Euro 2024 Squad and kicked out Manchester City’s Jack Grealish and Manchester United’s Harry Maguire.
The two players were axed for different reasons. Manchester City winger Grealish was removed from the 26-man squad due to his poor performance for the Premier League Champions.
Former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire failed to make the final squad for injury reasons. The defender suffered a calf injury in April 2024.
Maguire has been participating in an individual training programme, but Southgate is not interested in risking the player ahead of the competition in Germany.
It is going to be a huge loss for the Three Lions because the defender has been an integral part of the squad over the last three tournaments.
Grealish has been a world-class player for the Three Lions since he made his debut for the country on September 8, 2020.
The two players will join James Maddison, Curtis Jones, and Jardel Quansah, who were also eliminated from the squad ahead of Euro 2024.
The Three Lions confirmed the departure of Maddison and Liverpool youngster Jones after they left the training camp on Thursday, June 6, 2024.
The England Football Association released a statement via their social media account, saying, “James Maddison and Curtis Jones have departed the England camp, having been told they are not part of our final Euro 2024 squad.”
“We thank them for being an important part of our pre-tournament preparation.”
Another player that has been dropped for Euro 2024 is Jarrad Branthwaite. The Everton defender was dropped a few minutes before the final announcement of the 26-man squad.
Gareth Southgate also dropped Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, despite the fact that he performed exceptionally well in the 2023–24 Premier League season.
The English squad will be looking forward to their last friendly match ahead of the Euro 2024 in Germany. The Three Lions will face Iceland on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 7:45 pm.
