All is not over yet for embattled Denmark international, Christian Eriksen whose contract with Inter Milan was terminated because of the defibrillator device planted in him.
Inter Milan had to terminate Eriksen’s contract because laws in Italy do not permit footballers to play the game with an implanted device.
Hence, the 29-year-old attacking midfielder has been without a club since December 17, 2021, about 6 months after he collapsed on the pitch during a European Championship match between his country and Finland.
Recall that Christian Eriksen was taken to the hospital after the incident where it was confirmed that he suffered a cardiac arrest during the European Championship group stage game.
Hence, a defibrillator device had to be planted in him, a decision that has ended his 4 and the half-year contract he signed with Inter Milan in 2020.
Recall that he joined the Italian Serie A side on January 28, 2020, from Tottenham Hotspur for a transfer fee worth €27 million. Before he left the Premier League club, Christian Eriksen scored 69 goals and provided 90 assists in 305 games in all competitions.
When he arrived at Inter Milan, he was seen as a flop because he found it difficult to play as well as he did when he was at Tottenham Hotspur. However, before the Denmark international developed a heart condition on June 12, 2021, he was able to score 8 goals and provided 3 assists in 60 games in all competitions.
Less than three days after Inter Milan terminated Christian Eriksen’s contract, his agent, Martin Schoots told Sky Sports that the former Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder’s football career has not ended.
The agent said the footballer is working hard to return to competitive football, adding that some clubs (which he did not mention) have reached out to him and his client.
“Christian is doing really fine. We’re hopeful he can get back in professional football. There is no reason not to be optimistic”, the agent said.
“He is working really hard, and I’m glad that he was able to do that during the last few months in silence.
“We had so many requests for interviews, documentaries – all kinds of initiatives – especially from the UK. He is still so popular in Britain and not only with Spurs fans, not only for his fantastic football skills but also for his social and humble personality.
“It’s still amazing to read in the English press and fan websites that Spurs are looking for what is called ‘Eriksen’s replacement’ two years after he has left. People probably are not aware of it, but implicitly that’s such an incredible compliment.
“You hardly could blame Spurs that they struggle to find a player who has the qualities to become the League’s top assist-maker, helping them to reach three Champions League qualifications in a row and the Champions League final. There are simply not too many of those players, and there is always competition with other clubs to sign them.
“It’s too early to say where Christian’s future lies. Because of special regulations in Italy, which have already existed for decades, the only thing we know for sure is that it will not be in Italy. And it will not be in another continent either, because of family reasons.
“A few clubs have already contacted us some weeks ago. We have to see what the future brings. But it seems bright and that is the most important thing.”
Based on the comments of Christian Eriksen’s agent, there is a possibility that the Denish midfielder would get a new club in January or latest in the summer. However, the footballer’s likely destination is not known yet.
Meanwhile, his place in the national team is still very much intact which means that he might be considered when the country starts the 2022-2023 UEFA Nations League campaign in June.
Christian Eriksen has played for Denmark 109 times and has scored 36 goals for the national team since he made his international debut on March 10, 2010.
