The partnership deal Michael Jordan has with Paris Saint Germain received a huge boost after the French club signed one of the greatest footballers of all time, Lionel Messi this summer.

The deal which has been on since 2019 is centered around the provision of kits – both jerseys and footwear for all the players and backroom staff of the French club.

Aside from that, there is provision for the supply of the PSG’s kits for commercial purposes. That is, the Jordan brand must make the kits available for the club’s supporters to buy both online and offline.

Michael Jordan is popular across the world as the greatest basketball player of all time. The 58-year-old American basketball legend played the game between 1984 and 2003.

During his active years, his performance on the court earned him a lot of endorsement and partnership deals which earned him a lot of money.

His biggest sponsorship deal is the one that exists between him and American sportswear-making company Nike. The deal permitted him to have his sportswear brand known as the Jordan brand.

Nike has been the supplier of kits to PSG over the years. However, in 2018, the Jordan brand and PSG began to discuss how they would make the Jordan brand the club’s official kits.

After a series of discussions, the Jordan brand which is a subset of Nike became the official kit brand for PSG. PSG players first used the new brand on September 18, 2018, during a UEFA Champions League game against Liverpool.

According to reports, the sponsorship deal which officially took off in the 2019-2020 season will last for three years subject to renewal. This means that the deal will expire in 2023 if PSG and Micheal Jordan fail to renew it before then.

According to AFP, the sponsorship deal is expected to generate over €200 million in annual revenues for Nike.

Reports also claimed that Michael Jordan is entitled to 5 percent on every kit PSG sell via their online and offline stores. The NBA legend has been earning this percentage since the 2019-2020 season.

The partnership deal between Jordan and PSG makes the French club the first football club to enter into a sportswear supply deal with the Jordan brand. In NBA, only the Charlotte Hornets owned by Michael Jordan are using the Jordan brand kits.

On the other hand, several schools in the United States have signed up for the Jordan Brand. The schools include the University of Michigan, University of Florida, University of Oklahoma, and Jordan’s Alma mater, the University of North Carolina.

Recently, Michael Jordan reportedly admitted that Brazilian and PSG winger, Neymar played a part in the actualization of the partnership deal between PSG and the Jordan brand.

The NBA legend was quoted as saying: “In fact, PSG came to us to make this partnership. Neymar was a big fan of the Jordan brand. The rapprochement was therefore easier. What is more, in marketing, Paris represents fashion. We see the brand as a lifestyle leisure brand, so the partnership was simple”.

How Lionel Messi is helping Micheal Jordan to grow richer

Michael Jordan is not active in the game of basketball but he is very active in the business. His partnership deal with Nike and other chains of businesses has made him $2.1 billion rich.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic that affected almost every aspect of offline businesses, the NBA legend lost 24 percent of his worth which means that he is currently worth around $1.6 billion.

Hence, the fact that PSG signed Lionel Messi who was forced to leave FC Barcelona due to the financial hardship at the club, is a blessing to Michael Jordan.

For instance, since PSG unveiled the 34-year-old record 6-time Ballon d’Or winner, the club has reportedly sold over 120 million euros of PSG’s kits carrying the Messi’s name.

Based on the 5 percent agreement PSG have with Michael Jordan, the NBA legend has made over 6 million euros from Messi’s arrival at PSG already.

Michael Jordan is expected to make at least 10 times that amount before the end of this season based on the 5 percent per kit sales deal he has with PSG.

This is possible because it has been estimated that PSG would sell at least 2.5 million shirts featuring Lionel Messi’s name before the end of the 2021-2022 season.
