Liverpool have been ranked first among the most successful English club sides while Manchester United sits in second place.
The Merseyside outfit have tasted numerous successes in recent years, and have surpassed the Red Devils in major titles.
It is safe to say trophies are the currency of success in football, they are what supporters use as evidence of any club’s achievements.
At the start of each season, all clubs around the world will be looking to lay their hands on one or two silverware before the season comes to an end.
However, in England, Liverpool and Manchester United have done great as the two teams with the most trophies in English football.
Manchester United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson famously stated that his mission was to knock his club’s great rivals Liverpool off their seat for most League titles and he managed to do just that before his retirement in 2013.
The Scottish manager won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and three Champions League honors during his spell at Old Trafford, and is regarded as one of the greatest of all time.
Following Liverpool’s success in their sixth Champions League title in June 2019 and their 19th league title in 2020, Jurgen Klopp’s side have shown that they can challenge once again.
After Liverpool won their sixth UEFA Super Cup title in 2019, beating Chelsea through a penalty shootout in Istanbul, Reds fans were quick to declare that they had become the most successful club in English football.
The most successful teams in England have had multiple periods of sustained success, some recent, others in generations past.
In this article, we’ll take a look at the English club sides with the most trophies
English Clubs With Most Trophies:
Liverpool – 68 trophies
Manchester United – 67 trophies
Arsenal – 49 trophies
Chelsea – 34 trophies
Manchester City – 34 trophies
Tottenham Hotspur – 26 trophies
Liverpool
Liverpool extended their lead atop the list of the most successful football clubs in England with an extra-time victory over Chelsea in the 2024 Carabao Cup final.
The Reds have been Champions of Europe on six occasions (three more than any other English club) and have 19 league titles to their name.
The Jurgen Klopp era has brought further glory to the red side of Merseyside, putting an end to their league title drought and also securing a sixth Champions League.
Manchester United
Much is made of Manchester United knocking Liverpool off their perch for the most league titles.
The Red Devils still have the most topflight crowns in English football with 20, but they have been overtaken by their bitter rivals in total trophy count.
Manchester United are 20-time league winners, 12-time FA Cup winners, and three-time UEFA Champions League winner.
Arsenal
There is an argument Arsenal have had the most sustained success in the history of English football.
Since their first league title in 1931, the Gunners have been champions of England in every decade apart from the 1960s and 2010s. They also have the most FA Cup wins and final appearances (14 and 21).
Despite the invincible peak reached under former boss Arsene Wenger, the Gunners have not generally been quite as prolific as others. The Emirates outfit will be hoping for changes under Mikel Arteta this season or in the coming years.
Chelsea
Chelsea have an ownership change to thank for their fourth place here. The Blues had one league title, three FA Cups, and two League Cups when the then-owner Roman Abramovich took over.
Those numbers of trophies now read seven League titles, eight FA Cups, and five League Cups with a quarter of European trophies for good measure.
Chelsea’s achievement has not been the softest with regular managerial changes and squad overhauls, but the Blues have a talent for lifting trophies even in seemingly disappointing seasons.
Manchester City
It speaks to the impact of Manchester City’s current owners that they are up to joint-fourth on this list.
Seven of their nine league titles have been won since 2012, and the same goes for their League Cup haul. Man City completed the domestic treble in 2018-19.
The Cityzens have enjoyed a sustained period of dominance, setting records regularly and they completed the true treble in 2023 after winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.
Those glories opened up further opportunities for silverware, with Pep Guardiola’s team picking up the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup in late 2023.
Their relentless collection of trophies suggests they will continue to climb the list throughout the 2020s and more European glory could be on the cards in the future.
Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham have twice won the First Division and lifted the UEFA Cup on two occasions. Despite only a couple of league crowns, the Lilywhites completed a historic double in 1961.
Only two teams (Arsenal and Manchester United) can better their tally of eight FA Cups at the time of writing.
Tottenham have only won a couple of trophies since 1991, but have a few near-misses to their name with a Champions League final appearance and a few seasons of genuine Premier League contention.
