The German has been a subject of interest from Chelsea for a long while now and it seems that he can’t wait to get started in West London. Kai Havertz has told Bayer Leverkusen – ‘I want to play for Chelsea. And please don’t take too long agreeing on a fee, because I want to start training there as quick as possible.”
The Havertz saga has been on for the majority of the summer window as Chelsea try to lower down the fee. Leverkusen does not intend giving the Londoners any “corona discount” for a player of Havertz’s quality. The Blues are still €20m short of the Germans’ valuation of their prized asset which they could well make up for with add-ons. His latest comments confirm that he is well and truly yearning for the move so it’s up to Chelsea now to seal that deal.
Havertz would become the most expensive German player of all time, eclipsing Timo Werner who also moved to Chelsea this summer. His quality is evident for all to see and he undoubtedly would be a fantastic signing for Frank Lampard. While Leverkusen is remaining defiant on the price demands for the player, there may be signs that the club is preparing for life without the midfielder next season.
According to Sky Sports Italia journalist Angelo Mangiante, the German club are targeting Roma’s Patrik Schick as a replacement for Havertz. The new Premier League season begins on September 12, despite last season only concluding at the end of July. Chelsea has already signed attacking players Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. It’s thought that Werner and Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has spent time trying to convince Havertz to join the west London side. Signing Havertz would show even more intention from owner Roman Abramovich that he wants Chelsea to be title contenders again.
The 24-year-old spent the season on loan at RB Leipzig from Roma, and impressed in the Bundesliga, scoring 10 goals. It is said that the player will be available for a fee of €25 million (£22.5m), with Leverkusen strongly interested in the player as a potential replacement for Havertz. Should the club be able to reach an agreement with Roma, then it may make them more open to selling Havertz to Chelsea this summer, especially should they make a healthy profit from the deal.
