Barcelona were chased off the field by angry Espanyol fans while they were celebrating winning the league for the first time under Xavi Hernandez.
The Catalans defeated Espanyol at home 4-2 to seal their first league title in four years. After the final whistle, Xavi and his players gathered in a circle to hold a ring-of-roses-style celebration.
The Espanyol fans sprinted into the stadium after going through security to disrupt the celebration of the Barcelona players.
They went straight to the Barcelona players throwing chairs and bottles.
The Barca players who were terrified ran immediately into the tunnel to escape the angry mob.
One member of the backroom staff was seen falling after he was chased by the angry Espanyol fans. It was later confirmed that Barcelona players escaped without getting hurt.
After the encounter, it was seen that Barcelona players later reacted to the incident by trying to fight back, but they were stopped by the security agencies.
However, Xavi reacted to the incident, saying, “It’s normal to celebrate, but I understand that we are not at home and we can’t be disrespectful.”
How Barcelona Defeated Espanyol in La Liga
Relegation haunted Espanyol played shocking football but couldn’t match the energy of Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski who put two goals in for Barcelona.
Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde were also on the scoresheet against Espanyol.
Javi Puado and Joselu scored two goals to make the scoreline more respectable for Espanyol after Barcelona’s eased down their attack.
The result sent The Catalans 14 points clear of Real Madrid on the La Liga table.
They won the title with four more matches to play and just three losses in the league. It was Barcelona’s 27th League title.
After the win, Xavi said, “It’s a job well done. This started in July, and after months of work and sacrifice, we have achieved our aim.
“The fans and the club deserve it; it gives us stability and security that things are being done well.
“We have sealed La Liga with a fantastic performance. We were brilliant tonight.
“The team relaxed at the end, and Espanyol showed pride.”
Barcelona did a lot of rebuilding this season with the signings of Lewandowski, Raphinha, Kounde, Kessie, and many more.
Barcelona took the early lead on top of the table, and they never allowed Real Madrid to get close to them in terms of challenging for the title.
Xavi has pulled away from the pressure on the Barcelona side after their elimination from the Champions League and the Europa League.
The Spanish giant is also looking forward to buying more players next season in a bid to challenge for the title.
