Embattled Manchester United forward, Mason Greenwood has been included in the club’s Premier League squad for the 2022-2023 season despite facing a legal battle.
Mason Greenwood used to be one of the brightest youngsters at Old Trafford until January 2022 when his ex-girlfriend Harriet Robson accused him of rape, physical assault, and threat to kill.
After Harriet’s allegations against Greenwood had gone public, Manchester United suspended him indefinitely while they kept paying him his regular wages (£ 75,000 per week).
Harriet Robson’s allegations dragged the 20-year-old right-winger into police custody for days before he was granted bail. While the investigation into the allegations continues to linger, the out-of-favor England international has been away from professional football and hardly makes public appearances.
Amid that, on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, Manchester United published the club’s confirmed squad for the 2022-2023 Premier League campaign on their official website and Mason Greenwood’s name was included.
The club’s new coach, Erik ten Hag named 25 senior players for the 2022-2023 Premier League campaign excluding the club’s senior team regulars like Mason Greenwood, Anthony Elanga, and Alejandro Garnacho.
However, Greenwood, Elanga, and Garnacho were included in Manchester United’s under-21 squad since they are still in their early 20s. Based on Premier League rules, players named in the under-21 squad can be used to execute Premier League games as they are listed as backups to the senior team. This means that Greenwood, Elanga, and Garnacho are eligible to play for Manchester United’s senior team in this season’s Premier League campaign.
However, Manchester United will not feature Greenwood until the legal system in the United Kingdom clear the 20-year-old English winger from any wrongdoing. If that can be achieved before the end of this season, United will lift Greenwood’s suspension and the youngster will resume training with the club’s under-21 team and then push his way back to the club’s senior team.
Note that before Mason Greenwood’s legal battle commenced in January 2022, the Manchester United academy graduate has played 129 times for the Red Devils in all competitions in which he scored 35 goals and provided 12 assists.
Greenwood’s contract with Manchester United will expire on June 30, 2025, but he has an option to extend the contract for one more year. The last time he extended his contract with the club was on February 16, 2021.
