Ramon Jesurun, the Football Association (FA) President of Colombia has been released on bail after he was arrested following the 2024 Copa America final.

Jesurun’s arrest was made known via videos that surfaced online on Monday, July 15, 2024.

A Miami-Dade County police file indicated FA President Ramon Jesurun had been apprehended due to charges of “assault on officer/employee” on Sunday night, July 14, 2024, at Hard Rock Stadium.

Security guards denied Jesurun entry to the pitch where the final was played alongside his son and other family members.

Why Was The FA President Of Colombia Ramon Jesurun, Arrested?

Reports indicate that he was making way to the pitch for the awards ceremony after Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0, courtesy of a goal by Lautaro Martinez in extra-time.

A melee ensued with Ramon Jesurun and his son caught up in the unfortunate incident, leading to the pair being arrested, according to Colombian newspaper El Tiempo.

Speaking after he was released, the Colombian Football Federation President, Jesurun, expressed that a security guard disregarded his office.

Ramon Jesurun said: “This badge says ‘full access’ and a security guard … disregarded it“.

The 71-year-old apparently made this comment after parting with about $2,000 as bail for his arrests.

Ramon added that he was pushed by the security guard and a “ridiculous, unnecessary “ scuffle occured.

He said: “I insisted (to the security guard) that I should enter and he pushed me and a ridiculous, unnecessary melee broke out.”

Lows And Lows Of 2024 Copa America

The 2024 Copa America has been filled with distasteful scenes and the final wasn’t an exception.

There was chaos at the Hard Rock stadium before the game between Colombia and Argentina, resulting in the clash being delayed by 82 minutes.

According to reports, spectators stormed the gates of the venue with people pushed to the ground and others attempting to sneak into the stadium via air-conditioning ducts.

Based on information from the police, 27 people were arrested while 55 others were ejected from the stadium.

Despite the ugly scene, a Miami-Dade police director Stephanie Daniels shared that she is “very proud of our officers’ response to a volatile situation and for their hard work in keeping our community safe as well as our law-enforcement partners who provided key support.”

CONMEBOL, the governing body of football in South America, suggested security procedures like constructing an outer perimeter to screen ticketless fans had not been followed by organizers.

Meanwhile, recall Uruguay boss, Marcelo Bielsa, has also expressed his disappointment at the organization of the tournament, bashing CONMEBOL and the United States.

Following the semi-final encounter between Uruguay and Colombia, which ended 1-0 in favor of the former, distasteful incidents erupted at the Bank of America Stadium.

Colombian fans were seen attacking families of Uruguay players, leading to stars like Darwin Nunez and Federico Valverde resulting in self defense.

The United States of America are joint hosts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada, but recent happenings has left football enthusiasts wondering if they are capable of hosting the world.

The political tension in the country in recent weeks in addition to gun violence in the country has resulted in some fans calling for them to be stripped of the hosting rights for the showpiece.
