Chelsea will pay £50,000 fine after having six of their players receive yellow cards during 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday, October 6, 2024.

Nuno Espirito Santos’ Nottingham Forest nearly established their reputation as giant killers. They nearly recreated what they did at Anfield against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Chris Wood stunned Chelsea with a 49th-minute opening goal before Noni Madueke netted the equalizer for the hosts.

The game was marked with heated moments with players from both sides receiving yellow cards.

Nottingham Forest even ended up playing with 10 men when James Ward-Prowse picked up his second yellow card in the 78th minute.

Moise Caicedo was the first Chelsea player to be penalized by referee Chris Kavanagh after he took down Morgan Gibbs-White in the 21st minute.

Prolific playmaker Cole Palmer also got booked in the 75th minute for dissent.

In the final minutes of the game, the match descended into a full-blown brawl with players from both sides involved in a bitter confrontation.

Nottingham Forest player Neco Williams sparked the row when he pushed Marc Cucurella against the host club’s manager Enzo Maresca. Maresca fell over due to the assault.

Chris Kavanagh dolled out three more yellow cards during the incident. The mastermind Neco Williams got booked for his role in the fallout. Cucurella was penalized for an angry response. His teammate Lewis Colwill picked the third card for clashing with Neco Williams.

In stoppage time, Pedro Neto was also booked. In the last touch of the ball. Wesley Fofana picked the final and Chelsea’s sixth yellow card in the game.

The ill-tempered draw saw Chris Kavanagh dish out a total of nine yellow cards with Chelsea picking six of the nine.

It is not the first time the London-based club have picked up six or more yellow cards in a single match this season. During their away trip to Bournemouth on September 14, 2024, they picked up eight yellow cards. Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez, Nicolas Jackson, Lewis Colwill, Jadon Sancho, Renato Veiga, and Joao Felix were all booked.

Why Chelsea will pay £50,000 for the six yellow cards against Nottingham Forest

Under FA regulations, teams whose players pick six or more yellow cards in a single match are always set to face sanctions. Also, the teams are charged fees ranging from £10 to £55 per yellow card. The charges per yellow card depend on the offence leading to the card.

When the number of yellow cards picked in a single match is six and above, the team is indicted for failing to control their players and the punishment is usually a fine.

Chelsea were fined £25,000 for the 6+ yellow cards they picked up at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth. Note that the fine is separate from the standard fees charged by the FA for each yellow card.

Now, as re-offenders in a single season during the Nottingham Forest match, they are likely to pay double the previous amount, as confirmed by The Mail.

And that is not all. Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella will miss the club’s next match against Liverpool having accumulated five yellow cards already this season.

Chelsea to set unwanted Premier League record with increasing number of yellow cards per match

The six yellow cards against Nottingham Forest has seen Chelsea total 27 yellow cards in just seven matches into the season.

They are averaging almost four yellow cards per match. This means they could rack up 146 yellow cards at the end of the season.

That would comfortably beat the Premier League record for bookings across a season they set last term by finishing the campaign with 105 yellow cards, four more than previous record-holders Leeds United.
