However, five months down the line, Adam Wharton earned a surprise inclusion in England’s 26-man squad for the tournament in Germany.

The Englishman, who currently plays for Crystal Palace, joined the Eagles from Blackburn Rovers on February 1, 2024, for a fee of £18 million, with add-ons taking it to £22 million.

His first game with the Eagles wasn’t quite bright, as the ball was stolen from him after he came on as a substitute against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The incident resulted in the Seagulls securing a 3-0 lead, before ultimately going on to pick up a 4-1 smashing win.

Definitely, Adam Wharton was not pleased by what occurred, and he has subsequently made efforts to make amends.

The 20-year-old has developed remarkably well since then, starting 15 games, recording 3 assists, and becoming an important member of Oliver Glasner’s side.

Wharton made his debut for the England Under-21 side in March 2024 after initially being called up to the England Under-20s.

    Adam Wharton’s Senior England Debut

Anyway, following an impressive senior debut against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, June 3, 2024, Adam Wharton has duly earned a place in England’s squad for the 2024 European Championship.

Interestingly, the central midfielder is joined in England’s 26-man squad by three of his team-mates at Crystal Palace – forward Eberechi Eze, defender Marc Guehi and goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

The Eagles are the side most represented in the Three Lions squad for the tournament, and it will be fascinating what this quartet of players have to offer.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner was full of praise for the midfielder on May 6, 2024, following the club’s 4-0 humiliation of Manchester United – a game England manager Gareth Southgate witnessed at Selhurst Park.

Glasner after the encounter lauded Wharton for his “decision making”, and “pre-orientation” amongst others.

Oliver Glasner said: “He’s stepped up so quickly and is adapting to Premier League football and the intensity, the speed of the game.

“His decision-making, his pre-orientation, his solutions with one or two touches are amazing.

“But also we have to stay calm. I always wish the best for my players and the more successful, the more international games, the better it is because everybody wants to play for his home country.”

    Gareth Southgate On Adam Wharton

Gareth Southgate also had some great words to say about Adam Wharton, following his display in England’s 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, June 3, 2024.

    Adam Wharton

Gareth Southgate said: “He is a very calm boy. He seems to have taken everything in his stride when you think of what the last year has been.

“But when you talk to him, he is just pretty unflappable as he was on the pitch. That ability to receive and see a picture early isn’t something you should underestimate.”

Meanwhile, Wharton grew up supporting Blackburn Rovers, having been born in Blackburn, and in 2008, at the age of four, the youngster was a mascot for a match against Chelsea at Ewood Park before joining Blackburn Rovers two years later.

Adam Wharton proceeded to amass 51 appearances for Rovers in all competitions, netting four goals and providing five assists across all competitions, before moving to Selhurst Park.

Additionally, Just Munoz (4) has made more assists for Crystal Palace since Wharton (3) moved to the South London side.

Moreover, Adam Wharton is also high up on the Eagles’ list of tackles won (35) and duels won (79), with just Munoz recording better figures than him in both categories.

Wharton was also questioned about a potential call-up to three Lions after the game against Manchester United and he expressed that it wasn’t his primary focus at the time.

Adam Wharton added: “If I get the call-up, wow, fantastic. If not, [I’ll be] recovering somewhere and then get ready to go again.

“I’m never really satisfied with my performances. Even if I have a good game, I always remember the things I could have done better. That’s just how I’ve always looked at games.”

It will be interesting to see if he can light up the 2024 European Championship for England, as they aim to clinch their first major silverware since winning the 1966 FIFA World Cup, defeating West Germany 4-2 in the final after extra time.
