Manchester had taken the lead just 90 seconds into the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. Kevin de Bruyne, noted for his assist-making, latched onto a perfect cross from Riyad Mahrez to head past his Belgian colleague, Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, at the Etihad Stadium.
The fastest goal in Champions League history
Kevin de Bruyne’s goal was scored in 93 seconds from the time the referee blew the whistle, making it the fastest in a UEFA Champions League semi-final ever. While this is good news for City, Los Blancos could argue that they have the longest time to get back into the game in semi-final history. However, things could become worse.
Roy Makaay still holds the record for the fastest goal ever scored in the Champions League, clocking in at 10.12 seconds – even Usain Bolt would struggle – to put Bayern Munich ahead against, you guessed it, Real Madrid in their round-of-16 clash in 2006-07.
For nearly 15 years, Roy Makaay held the record for the fastest goal in the UEFA Champions League.
In 2007, Roy Makaay of Bayern Munich set a new record for the fastest goal in UEFA Champions League history, scoring in 10.12 seconds against Real Madrid.
With a 3-2 disadvantage going into the second leg of their round of 16 matches against the Galacticos, the Bavarians needed to get off to a fast start.
Real Madrid started the game by passing the ball back to Fernando Gago, who then passed it to full-back Roberto Carlos. The ball was received by the Brazilian, one of the greatest attack-minded defenders of all time, but his heavy touch was quickly intercepted by Hasan Salihamidi.
The Bosnian midfielder then dashed forward with the ball and crossed for Makaay in the penalty area, where the Dutchman easily put the ball past Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas to give Bayern Munich the lead.
Due to the away goals rule, the Bavarians won the game 2-1 and qualified for the quarterfinals.
