West Ham flop Kalvin Phillips was ridiculed by a fan following a disappointing performance against Newcastle.
The England midfielder responded in annoyance by swearing and flashing his middle finger while boarding the team bus when one of West Ham fans booed him over his contribution to the 4-3 loss against Newcastle on Saturday, March 30.
Since his loan move from Manchester City in January, the midfielder has struggled to find form.
Despite being subbed on with his team ahead 3-1, Phillips failed to make an impact and ultimately cost his team the game.
West Ham boss David Moyes acknowledged that his decision to bring on Phillips did not work out as planned, as the midfielder gave away a penalty and was unable to prevent Newcastle from securing a comeback victory.
After the match, fans requested to take a picture with Phillips, but he chose to board the team bus instead.
As he headed towards the team bus, Phillips faced heckles from fans, including one who called him “absolutely useless.” In response, Phillips raised his middle finger towards the fan, causing children to witness the confrontation.
After his disappointing performance at St James’ Park, Phillips faced criticism from fans, with one labeling him as “the worst loan of all time.”
Another added: “I’d send Kalvin Phillips back to Man City before the clocks go forward.”
Phillips was also criticized for his outburst with one fan suggesting he “lost his head”.
Another added: “They got to cut his loan for that? Unbelievable disrespect.”
Meanwhile, One fan on X had predicted that West Ham, who were leading 3-1 at the time, would lose 4-3 after Phillips came on.
West Ham paid an undisclosed loan fee to bring Phillips to London Stadium and will cover his £140,000-a-week wages until the end of the season.
The move was aimed at helping him secure a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad at Euro 2024, as he was not getting regular playing time under Guardiola at Manchester City.
Previously a key player for Southgate, he was left out of the England squad for games against Brazil and Belgium after a disappointing time at Manchester City.
However, his poor form at West Ham is making his stats for England increasingly unlikely.
Since joining in January, Phillips has made eight appearances, mostly as a substitute.
What’s next for West Ham and Newcastle?
