West Ham United have confirmed the imminent departure of their manager David Moyes at the end of the season.
The Hammers’ club statement confirming the imminent exit reads;
“West Ham United can confirm David Moyes will leave the Club by mutual consent at the end of the 2023/24 season when his contract expires.”
The 61-year-old Scott and English football veteran will draw the curtain on his seven-year spell with the Hammers.
We reported earlier that West Ham United have reached an agreement with with former Sevilla and Wolves manager Julen Lopetequi to become the club’s new manager, replacing David Moyes.
Moyes’ imminent exit from West Ham was envisaged following growing tensions between him and the club’s hierarchy.
At the center of Moyes’ fallout with the Hammers was a 44-year-old influential new technical director, Tim Steidten, who arrived the club from the German Bundesliga in July 2023.
Tim Steidten is said to have been vehemently opposed to David Moyes’ tactics and has led the push not to renew his contract at the end of the season.
Sources close to the Hammers’ dressing room reveal sometimes Tim Steidten would join the players in the dressing room before and after matches, further fueling tensions with David Moyes.
West Ham had to step in and ban Steidten from overstepping his bounds and intruding into the club’s dressing room to de-escalate simmering tensions between him and David Moyes.
Also, it is understood some members of the West Ham hierarchy reportedly favored a contract extension for David Moyes but Tim Steidten, who is said to wield enormous influence at the club, objected to the move.
He led the charge to have Moyes axed out at the expiration of his contract and was reportedly instrumental to the brokered agreement with Julen Lopetequi as the new manager.
Moyes won his first major trophy as a football manager with West Ham United, leading the club to the 2022/23 Europa Conference League triumph.
As of the time of filing this report, David Moyes’ next step is unclear but reports say he could take a new offer from another English club.
