Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has opened up about his recent struggles after he was declared bankrupt in 2023.
The 44-year-old former England international revealed what went wrong in the Ben Heath podcast, claiming he doesn’t have the right people to guide him.
Wes Brown said, “I think the main thing is that when you are making a lot of money, you need the right people, don’t you? And I would say that’s one of the things I didn’t have. It was a little bit different. It wasn’t lots of people you go and speak to, and you maybe meet people and do this, do that.”
“I wasn’t interested in any of that. You said yes and got on with it. It’s a long story, and I won’t go into the details, but it’s stuff that happened a long time ago with certain investments and getting into stuff that, as a young kid, a lot of people go into but don’t really understand it.”
“It’s what a lot of people are doing, and then it came to a head last year, and that’s how it went. It’s happened, and I’m just getting on with it, but it’s one of those things you hope people, especially this generation, don’t get involved in.”
At one stage in Wes Brown’s football career, he was earning £50,000 in weekly wages, but His Majesty Revenues and Customs filed a bankruptcy petition against the 2008 Champions League winner.
The petition came in February 2023, and it was rubber stamped at the high court in April 2023. Also, Wes Brown split from his wife, Leanne Brown, in 2022.
In addition, Wes Brown downfall can also be attributed to his company collapsing, bad property deals, and overpaying on a farm.
The extent of his bankruptcy was revealed when he appeared in a social media video, where a tailor in the video jokingly said Wes Brown is so washed out that he cannot afford to buy a suit.
Despite his earnings during his playing career at Manchester United, Wes Brown was not the highest earner in the club. Some of his teammates earn six times more than the player’s wages.
It was predicted that he was trying to be on the same level as his teammates, who earned more than him. However, Brown denied the claim.
Wes Brown is more determined to return to being positive and wants to be successful again against every obstacle that comes his way.
