Former Liverpool star Naby Keita will not be in action again for Werder Bremen till the end of the season.
Werder Bremen have suspended the Guinean midfielder for indiscipline during their Bundesliga trip to North Rhine-Wesphalia to take on Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
A club statement by Werder Bremen confirmed the 29-year-old has been suspended for “deciding to go home instead” after he discovered he will not start the game against Bayer Leverkusen.
A furious Werder Bremen’s football director, Clement Fritz, made it clear the club will not tolerate Naby Keita’s behavior, hence the decision to axe him from first team till the end of the season.
Addressing the fallout with the Guinea international, Fritz said, Keita “let the team down” by “putting his Interests above that of the team” at this crucial stage of the season.
“He let his team down in a time of difficulty surrounding our recent run of form and squad availability and put his own interests above those of the team,” Fritz said.
He added the team needs all the focus as the league enters the crucial, hence the decision to axe the former Premier League midfielder from first-team to avoid distractions.
“…At this stage of the season, we need full focus on the remaining games and a team who stick together. That’s why we’ve been left with no alternative,” he added.
According to The BBC, Keita will not play for the team or take part in first-team training again for the rest of the season following the suspension.
Keita joined Werder Bremen on a free transfer from Liverpool in 2023, and signed a three-year contract till 2026.
His fallout with the club has been linked to his dwindling fortunes with the Bundesliga outfit since he joined the club. He has made only five appearances with only just one start.
