Wayne Rooney began his managerial reign at Birmingham City with a defeat, after his side suffered a 1-0 heartbreaking loss to Middlesbrough on October 21, 2023.

Birmingham City conceded in the 89th minute of the encounter, as Boro’s Morgan Rogers condemned them to a shocking defeat at Riverside Stadium.

Rooney’s former teammate at Manchester United and England, Mikel Carrick is currently the manager of Middlesbrough and the result moves his side one point adrift of 7th-placed Birmingham City.

The defeat meant that the Blues have now lost 4 games on the road this campaign, having suffered all-league defeats this season at away venues.

Wayne Rooney was appointed as Birmingham City manager when?

Wayne Rooney was appointed manager of the Championship club on October 11, 2023, replacing John Eustace, following a shaky start to the season for Birmingham City.

In his early interviews at the club, he spoke confidently about leading the team to the top flight of English football.

However, they will need to leave no stone unturned in order to make that become a reality this season.

Speaking after he was appointed manager, the former Everton forward said:

“It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realizing their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected.”

The Blues have amassed 18 points from 12 matches, winning 5 games, drawing 3 and losing 4.

Birmingham City finished 17th in the English Championship last campaign, after picking up 53 points from 46 league matches.

Previous club Rooney managed in England?

Rooney last managed Derby County in the Championship and he had an impressive spell at the club, although The Rams still suffered relegation to League One after they were docked 21 points for breaching financial rules.

Wayne Rooney next up in the second tier of English football, entertains Liam Rosenior’s Hull City.

Liam Rosenior was Rooney’s assistant at Derby County, before subsequently becoming the manager of the club following the exit of Wayne Rooney on June 24, 2022.

The 39-year-old has in the past spoken highly of the Manchester United legend, saying that he learned “so much” from the Englishman.

Rosenior said: “I have learnt so much from Wayne in terms of how he has dealt with the pressure of the situation we are in.”

Hull City sit 12th on the Championship table with 17 points from 12 matches, one point behind Birmingham City.

The encounter will be played at St Andrew’s Stadium, and the Blues are yet to suffer a defeat at their home ground this campaign.

Wayne Rooney will be hoping that he can engineer his side to secure their first victory under his tutelage on Wednesday, October 25, 2023.

Rooney last managed DC United in the MLS, and he spent about 15 months at the American club before both parties decided to end their ties on October 8, 2023.

The 37-year-old will be hoping to bring out the best from the truckload of players available at his disposal.
