Germany were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland at the St. Jakob Arena after failing to capitalize on their opening goal and close out the game for the second game running.
Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the Germans in the 14th-minute when Mathias Ginter set up the Manchester City Star to drive the ball past Switzerland shot-stopper Yan Sommer.
Switzerland soon took hold of the game and despite being a goal down, showered more intent and drive.
Renato Steffen has a go at goal soon but was denied by the feet of Arsenal’s Bernd Leno before striker Haris Seferovic missed a clear-cut chance to even tie as he could only hit the outside of the post.
Germany had a decent attempt of their own but Yan Sommer was up to the task. He made a superb double save from close range from Julian Draxler and new Bayern boy Leroy Sane.
Finally, Parity was restored in the 57th-minute when Breel Embolo selflessly cut the ball back for Silvan Widmer to tuck home.
Switzerland winger Ruben Vargas came close to stealing a winner when he attempted a backheel late in the game, however, that didn’t trouble the Germans.
Germany head coach Joachim Low spoke after the game, revealing that his side’s performance wasn’t good enough, but the fans should expect a better performance in October.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. We just failed to make it 2-0 again,”
“We just can’t capitalise on the good opportunities. That would have given us security. I think the draw will be okay. If you lead 1-0 twice and then don’t bring it home, that is of course annoying. We’ll attack properly in October.”
Goalscorer Ilkay Gundogan revealed he was angry his side could not close out the game, again.
Speaking to ZDF, he said: “I’m a little pissed off. We lost balls unnecessarily. It’s very annoying and I’m a little pissed off,”
“It was completely up to us. We were in a good starting position, leading 1-0. Then we gave away a bad pass, run into a counter-attack and then it’s 1-1.
“This is not a process, this is a very simple football game. If you have the ball up front, you have to keep it up there. Then you have to fight the last 10, 20 minutes and you are lucky to get out with a point.
“I’m dissatisfied, honestly. We should have played through the second half as ice cold. So we’re giving away two points.”
Germany has now fallen to two draws in their Nation League games as they see their lead slip away in both games.
They are third in Group A4 on two points, two points behind group leaders Spain, who thrashed Ukraine 4-0
