The draws for the 2021-2022 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and semifinals rounds are out. The reigning champions of the tournament, Chelsea football club will face the most successful club in the tournament, Real Madrid.
UEFA, the European football governing body conducted the draws in Nyon, France earlier today, March 18, 2022.
Chelsea defeated Lille 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 and traveled to France to beat Lille 2-1 in the second leg. The home and away victory helped them to qualify for the quarter-final stage of the competition.
To progress further, the Premier League side are condemned to knock out Real Madrid which ended the journey of PSG in the round of 16 stage of the competition.
It will be interesting to see how coach Carlo Ancelotti will lead Real Madrid to stop coach Thomas Tuchel’s men in this round. Note that Real Madrid have never knocked out Chelsea in this stage of the Champions League.
Also, Manchester City, last season’s finalists, will face Atletico Madrid, reigning Spanish La Liga champions, in the quarter-final stage of the Champions League. Recall that the Spanish team ended the journey of Manchester United in the round of 16 stage to book a place in the quarter-final stage.
While Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champions and current league leaders knocked out Sporting Lisbon to book a place in the quarter-final stage of the competition.
In the same vein, Portuguese football club, Benfica will face Premier League side, Liverpool, in the quarter-final round of the competition. Recall that Liverpool knocked out reigning Italian champions Inter Milan to book a place in the next round. While Benfica knocked out Ajax.
Also, Villarreal which stunned Juventus out of the UEFA Champions League campaign will face German Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich. Recall that Bayern got to the quarter-finals stage after knocking out RB Salzburg.
The first leg of the quarter-finals round will take place on April 6, 2022. All the games are scheduled to kick off at 20:00. The second leg of the round is scheduled to kick-off on April 13 at 20:00.
