Chelsea completed the league double over Tottenham Hotspur this campaign, with a much-needed win at Stamford Bridge.

The encounter was highly combative, as both teams fought hard in a bid to pick up important points in the crucial stage of the season.

Despite controlling the affair of the game in terms of ball possession, Spurs never had the cutting edge required to defeat Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss has found it easy playing against his former side, with his current side Chelsea picking up a home and away victory with ease.

Trevoh Chalobah scored the opener for Chelsea

Trevoh Chalobah poked the home side ahead in the 24th minute, with a great header beating goalie Guglielmo Vicario.

Chalobah scored following a free-kick won by Chelsea, with Conor Gallagher alongside Cole Palmer to take the set-piece.

Gallagher lofted the ball into the penalty area, with Trevoh Chalobah rising above Emerson Royal to nod the ball into the top corner.

Spurs had a great opportunity to equalize in the 38th minute via a free-kick, with Pedro Porro standing over the ball for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Porro sent the ball towards the back post, with Christian Romero in a great position to guide it home, however, he failed to hit the target from inside the six-yard area.

Chelsea went into the break leading, and in a contented position, given their display in the opening 45.

Postecoglou made two changes 3 minutes after the hour mark, bringing on Rodrigo Bentancur for Richarlison, while James Maddison came on for Pape Sarr.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also entered the fray, replacing Yves Bissouma, as Tottenham Hotspur sought an equalizer.

They were staring at their 3rd defeat in a row at that point, having lost their previous two matches to Newcastle United and Arsenal.

In the 67th minute, rapid defender Micky van de Ven was booked for a foul on Jackson, who was advancing on a counter.

Jackson’s rebound doubled the lead for Chelsea over Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea secured their second of the evening in the 72nd minute, with Nicolas Jackson being at the right place at the right time to score his 11th league goal of the season.

Cole Palmer took a free-kick 18 minutes before the end of the game, with his curling effort crashing off the crossbar with Vicario unable to gather.

The ball fell to Jackson, who did what a poacher would do, heading the ball into the back of the net from the rebound.

Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino then introduced Cesare Casadei for Mykhaylo Mudryk in the 75th minute, with Spurs also sending on Bryan Gil for Brennan Johnson 3 minutes later.

Five minutes before the conclusion of the clash, Josh Acheampong also came on for Alfie Gilchrist, who had an impressive evening under the floodlights at Stamford Bridge.

Ange Postecoglou’s last alteration in the game saw him bring on Giovani Lo Celso for Emerson Royal, while Pochettino also handed another young lad in Jimi Tauriainen his league debut, as he got into the action in stoppage time, replacing Jackson, who netted the second for the Blues.

Despite bossing the game and owning much of the possession, Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t turn it into goals and they succumbed to a defeat against a compact Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
