Since Todd Boehly and his consortium took over the ownership of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich, a series of restructuring has taken place at the Premier League club.
The most recent changes at the club are that Boehly has been confirmed as the chairman of Chelsea’s board and Marina Granovskaia is no longer the sporting director of the club after 10 years of meritorious service.
Hence, while most fans of the club are waiting impatiently for new signings this summer, Todd Boehly and his team of decision-makers are racking their heads on who will replace Granovskaia as the club’s sporting director.
Amid that, Michael Edwards, the football administrator who is said to be the brain behind the reinvigorated Liverpool, decided to step down as Liverpool’s sporting director after eleven years at the club.
Edwards spearheaded the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as the manager of Liverpool in 2015. He played a part in Liverpool’s fruitful recruitments which helped the club to win the Premier League, EFL Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
Thanks to his “smart, analytical-powered” transfer decisions, Liverpool have returned to reckoning in the last 5 years as a world-class team that contends for all titles every season.
Due to his overwhelming success at Liverpool, when it was first revealed in November 2021 that Michael Edwards would step down as Liverpool’s sporting director this summer, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain reportedly tried to appoint him but he turned them down.
Also, immediately after a Saudi-backed consortium bought Newcastle United almost a year ago, the Premier League club tried to lure Edwards to the club but the English administrator turned down the move.
Even though it has been widely reported that Edwards stepped down as Liverpool’s sporting director to concentrate on his family, Todd Boehly is said to be determined to lure the 42-year-old to Chelsea this summer.
Reports in the United Kingdom claimed that it might take a very mouth-watering offer to tempt Edwards to return to the football business as he has vowed to stay out of the game for a while.
But Todd Boehly who has openly described Edwards’ Liverpool as the best model to follow in the football business might decide to break the bank to lure the English football administrator back to the game.
As for now, Chelsea will continue to carry out their transfer business this summer through the help of their ex-sporting director Granovskaia and the club’s legend Petr Cech.
Reports from Stamford Bridge claimed that Todd Boehly and the club’s coach Thomas Tuchel currently have the final say when it comes to transfers until a new sporting director is appointed.
