According to reports, Chelsea has completed a medical test on Christopher Nkunku in preparation for a possible transfer to the Premier League club next summer.

In June, the 24-year-old player signed a new two-year extension to his contract at RB Leipzig which was expected to expire in 2026. The new contract includes a €60 million release clause, effective in the summer of 2023.

Despite interest from teams like Chelsea and Manchester City, he renewed his stay with the German Bundesliga side to the dismay of many football enthusiasts.

The France international is expected to leave in the summer of 2023, and preparations for his transfer have already begun.

According to German publication BILD, Chelsea snuck Nkunku in for a medical in Frankfurt soon before the summer transfer market closed.

It was done in preparation for a £53 million transfer from RB Leipzig to Chelsea ahead of the coming summer transfer window.

Nkunku’s excellent performance last season earned him the title of Bundesliga’s best player of the season.

And he’s continued his stellar play, scoring six goals in 11 appearances across all competitions to have a strong start to the new season.

Reports claimed that Nkunku’s secret cardiological examination was overseen by a Chelsea orthopedic surgeon. It was however for a move the following summer, not for the forthcoming January transfer window.

As previously reported in Germany, Matt Law of The Telegraph today reveals Christopher Nkunku did have a physical with the Blues.

However, Christopher Nkunku extended his contract by two years with Leipzig in June, which, if honored, would keep him with the club until 2026.

The Blues plan to bring in several talented new players to replace their aging center midfield.

Declan Rice, a former academy prodigy, Jude Bellingham, his English midfield partner, and Christopher Nkunku, a Frenchman, are all examples.

Despite speculations to the contrary, Chelsea appears to have won the race to sign Nkunku after he underwent a physical in preparation for a move next summer.

With Chelsea’s recent sale of Timo Werner back to RB Leipzig, the two clubs have likely established a cordial working relationship, which will benefit Graham Potter’s side in its pursuit of Nkunku in the upcoming summer.

The new owners put a lot of faith in former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who oversaw the club’s transfer activities this summer. It resulted in a single-window expenditure of approximately $250 million.

Acquired players include Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, Denis Zakaria, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Carney Chukwuemeka, Gabriel Slonina, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

If Chelsea could sign Nkunku for €60 million in 2023, it would be a huge coup for the Blues.

The futures of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech have created doubt in their attack.

At the end of the season, Chelsea will need to decide whether to extend the contract of the Germany international Kai Havertz, who has two years remaining on his present deal, or to cash in on the player.
