The 24-year-old German center-forward joined Chelsea in June 2021 from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for a transfer fee worth £45 million. He signed a 5-year deal with the Premier League club which will expire in June 2025.
Before he joined the club, Timo Werner played 45 games in all competitions for Leipzig in the 2019-2020 season. In those games, he scored a total of 34 goals and provided 13 assists. This performance tempted Chelsea to make him one of the club’s major targets.
When he arrived at Chelsea, he came with a lot of promise but the promise he joined Chelsea with is still a potential that is yet to come to full manifestation.
Since he started playing under coach Frank Lampard, the Germany international has managed to score 4 Premier League goals and provided 4 assists in 13 league games despite being a regular figure in the club’s first eleven.
While in all competitions, he has made 20 appearances for Chelsea in which he scored 8 goals and provided 5 assists. Despite this relatively fair performance, people, especially the fans of Chelsea football club expect him to do more for the London club.
On his part, Timo Werner admitted that since he came to Chelsea, he has been playing under pressure which he does not have a problem with. He however noted that the congested schedule in the Premier League is making it more difficult for him.
“It does matter how much you cost. It’s always a bit of pressure when you come to a new club,” Werner said ahead of Chelsea Premier League match against West Ham scheduled for Monday at 21:00. “But I think I can handle it very well. It’s not something new.
“The pressure is a little bit higher than the previous years but I think good footballers are the best under pressure and that’s my plan, I can do very well under pressure.
“The Premier League is a little bit different from my old league. It’s tougher than I thought. The contact here is harder than in Germany, it’s what I expected but not like this.”
Chelsea have fallen off the league’s top four, thanks to the drop in form in their last two games that saw them lose the 6 maximum points. They are currently occupying the 8th spot with 22 points.
So far this season, Chelsea have suffered three defeats, 4 draws and have enjoyed 6 wins in 13 league games. They are expected to beat West Ham convincingly at Stamford Bridge on Monday to return to being title contenders.
