Thomas Tuchel: the task waiting for the German coach at Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel has been touted as the successor of Frank Lampard at Chelsea even before the English tactician parted ways with the club today, January 25.

Since January 19 when Leicester City defeated Chelsea 2-0, it was clear that the days of Frank Lampard were numbered and Tuchel looked like the anointed candidate to replace the Englishman. However, critics of Lampard were surprised that the club’s owner, Roman Abramovich still allowed him to continue as the club’s coach until January 24.

Before he got his sack letter, Lampard led the club to face a Championship side, Luton City in the fourth round of the English FA Cup on Sunday and managed to win the lowly rated club 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately for the English tactician, the victory was not enough to save his job.

Since he was sacked, the speculation has been that Chelsea are trying to secure the services of Thomas Tuchel before January 27, when Chelsea are scheduled to play against Wolves in the Premier League.

If this is anything to go by, the German tactician will be inheriting a Chelsea side that have shown little or no confidence since their 1-0 defeat in the hands of Everton on December 12, 2020.

Besides that, one of the biggest challenges of the 47-year-old German tactician who was sacked by Paris Saint Germain in December 2020, is how to make Chelsea’s new signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz do more for the club.

Warner and Havertz joined Chelsea last summer for a combined transfer fee of £120 million. The signing of Werner from RB Leipzig and Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen came with a lot of expectations because of their form in their former clubs.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, they have been a shadow of themselves since they join the club. It has been so terrible that the two Germans have managed to score a combined 5 goals and provided 6 assists in 35 Premier League games.

Hence, Tuchel’s duty would be to find a way to bring out the best in Werner and Havertz if Chelsea appoints him to replace Frank Lampard. The fact that they both struggled under Lampard is seen as one of the reasons he was let go.

More importantly, if Tuchel becomes Chelsea’s coach, what the club’s owner would expect from him is to find a way to push the club back to the top four on the league table. Lampard took Chelsea from the top of the league table to the 9th spot before he was sacked on Monday.

After losing 5 games in his last 8 Premier League games, Lampard’s Chelsea ended up with 29 points in 19 games, 5 points below Liverpool, and 11 points away from first-placed Manchester United.

As it stands, if Tuchel joins Chelsea and he can steady the ship by winning league games constantly, Chelsea can still bounce back to the top and probably become a title contender again especially if the clubs above them start dropping points.
