The manager of Chelsea football club, Thomas Tuchel has noted that Chelsea’s center-forward, Timo Werner has lost confidence in himself due to the bad run of games he has been having since he joined the West London club last summer. The German tactician stressed that it is his job to ensure that the German international believes in himself.

Timo Werner came to Chelsea on July 1, 2020, from German Bundesliga club, RB Leipzig for a transfer fee worth €53million. In the last season he spent at RB Leipzig, the 24-year-old center-forward scored a whopping 34 goals and provided 13 assists in 45 appearances which made him Chelsea’s dream signing.

He was expected to reciprocate this form at Chelsea especially after showing a lot of promise at the beginning of the 2020-2021 season under coach Frank Lampard. Unfortunately for him and the club, his form dropped drastically before the end of November 2020.

Despite playing below expectation at Chelsea which just sacked their manager, Lampard, due to a poor run of games in the Premier League, Werner has scored a total of 9 goals and provided 6 assists in 28 games in all competitions.

The appointment of Thomas Tuchel who happens to be a German like Time Werner is believed to be an effort to ensure that the German international gets back to the kind of form he exhibited last season while at Leipzig. It is believed that the former Paris Saint Germain coach would help him to adapt faster in the Premier League by making Chelsea’s style of play more suitable for his ability.

Thomas Tuchel understands the task before him and he has also recognized the can of capabilities the 24-year-old center-forward has. Even though Timo Werner ended up as an unused substitute in Chelsea’s league match against Wolves on Wednesday, January 27, Tuchel knows what the striker wants.

“Timo prefers to have space,” Tuchel said. “He is super fast, likes to play very high up on the last line. A little bit more to the left, to receive the ball in the open space. Can we develop movements and patterns of behavior to use his quality in narrow spaces? I am absolutely convinced, and that is my job [to do that].

“The guy is young, the guy is open, the guy is friendly and the guy is eager to learn. At the moment I can see that his face is a bit closed, I can see that the weight is on his shoulders. He cares a lot, and it shows that he has a fantastic character.

“Sometimes as a striker, it does not help if you care a lot, it is better as a striker to not care at all, but he is not that guy. He is not happy with himself and the way things have gone lately.

“It is important to rebuild his trust in himself, and to re-find a smile on his face and to stop doubting himself too much. It is my job to help him with this, and to help find the position where we can use his strengths.”

The new coach of Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel has revealed that he is yet to have a conversation with the owner of the club, Roman Abramovic since he was appointed almost a week ago.

The former PSG coach noted that the system at Chelsea is easier to work with because of the less cumbersome model of decision making.

Tuchel was saying this in comparison to his experience at PSG where he was sacked because he failed to agree with the club’s board members. The 47-year-old German tactician noted that he is still learning not to be too stubborn with his beliefs, an aspect he assumed contributed to his sacking at PSG.

“I won four titles in the last season and that was not enough,” Tuchel noted. “It came up in the transfer periods, I have to admit, that the wishes and ideas between coaches and sporting directors did not really match. This can happen sometimes.

“Once a relationship gets difficult there are always two sides [to the story]. I am not here to blame anyone. I am absolutely self-aware, this is a thing to improve – to be more relaxed and not too stubborn in my beliefs.

“The structure that I find here is a very clear and easy one to understand. There are not many people to make decisions.

“There were no words from Roman Abramovich so far. I spoke to Marina Granovskaia (Chelsea director) and Petr Cech, and this was very trustful and very honest, and clear. I had the feeling that this structure works for me.”

Chelsea’s next Premier League game is scheduled to take place at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, at 13:00 against Burnley.
