Thiago Silva has extended his stay at Chelsea football club. The 37-year-old Brazilian defender has signed a year deal with the Premier League side which means that he would remain at the club until June 30, 2023.
Thiago Silva’s previous contract with Chelsea ought to expire at the end of this season but due to how important he has been for the club, Chelsea decided to award him with a season extension.
Recall that at the end of the 2019-2020 season, Chelsea decided to bring Silva to the club after his contract with Paris Saint Germain expired. Despite the number of defenders he had to compete with, the Brazil international was able to establish himself at the club within a short while.
In May 2021, he helped the club to win the UEFA Champions League title for the first time in his career. He also helped the club to win the UEFA Super Cup.
The performance of Thiago Silva in the 2020-2021 season encouraged the club’s board to offer him a contract extension.
So far in the 2021-2022 season, the 37-year-old veteran defender has continued to remain a very important figure under coach Thomas Tuchel. He has played 22 games so far this season in which he scored two goals and provided two assists. Hence, his stay at the club had to be extended again.
“Thiago Silva’s experience, leadership, and performances have been and remain very important to this squad, so we are hugely pleased to extend his contract by another year”, Chelsea’s director, Marina Granovskaia, told the club’s website.
“We look forward to his continued influence as we seek honors this season and next, and more of the qualities that have led to him having such a big impact for us on and off the pitch.”
While reacting to his new deal with Chelsea, Silva said: “To play here with Chelsea is a real pleasure. I never thought I would play for three years here in this great club so I’m very happy to stay for another season.
“I would also like to say thanks to my family, the club, Marina, and Mr (Roman) Abramovich [owner of the club] for this opportunity.
“I will continue to give everything for this club and for the supporters, who have always been by my side since I arrived.
“It’s amazing to have this relationship with the fans and not only that but the players, staff, and the whole club. I’m going to give everything to keep playing at this level in the most important league in the world.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea have not succeeded in extending Antonio Rudiger’s contract despite being one of their best defenders in the last three seasons.
Rudiger wants to be among Chelsea’s top earners but Chelsea that are keen on keeping the German international are not ready to offer him such a pay rise.
Hence, the defender whose contract with Chelsea will expire on June 30, 2022, is free to discuss with foreign clubs from this January.
Reports in the United Kingdom claimed that European giants like Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain, Juventus, and Bayern Munich have opened talks with Rudiger.
The German defender might sign a pre-contract with any of the clubs this January and leave Chelsea on a free transfer next summer.
