Bayern Munich were knocked out of the DFB-POKAL due to a stunning goal by 3rd division club, Saarbrücken.

The Bavarians went ahead in the 16th minute, courtesy of a well-taken goal by Thomas Muller.

However, Saarbrücken brought the game back on level terms, with Patrick Sontheimer scoring in the 1st minute of additional time in the second 45.

In classical manner, Bayern Munich slumped to a 2-1 defeat, after Marcel Gaus struck in the 6th minute of additional time in the second half, and his goal definitely erupted wide celebrations.

The home crowd at the Ludwigspark stadium went into a frenzy following the shocking goal, with players of the Bundesliga champions stunned.

Bayern Munich last won the DFB-POKAL in the 2019/20 edition, defeating Bayern Leverkusen 4-2 in the final.

They are the most successful team in the competition’s history, winning the trophy on 20 different occasions.

Speaking after the encounter, Bayern Munich’s lone scorer on the night, Thomas Muller, expressed how losing in the second round was a “brutal blow” for them.

The shocking defeat against Saarbrücken, made it the 3rd time in the last 4 editions that the Bavarians have crashed out of the competition in the 2nd round.

Muller also noted: “To be eliminated for the third time in the second round of the Cup is not what we strive for. We have to congratulate Saarbruecken for their fight. A bit of luck is also part of it.”

Bayern Munich crashed out of the DFB-POKAL quarter-final in the 2022/23 season, having lost 2-1 to FC Freiburg.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have had an impressive start to the 2023-2024 season, although they sit 2nd on the German Bundesliga standings with 23 points from 9 matches.

In the UEFA Champions League, the German giants sit at the summit of Group A, with 9 points from 3 matches this season.

Bayern Munich also visit the Signal Iduna Park to play Borussia Dortmund on November 4, 2023, a German Bundesliga encounter, which could be an indicator into how the season will pan out for either of the 2 teams.

The Black and Yellows sit on 21 points from 9 matches, winning 6 games and drawing 3.

They will go into that league fixture with a stamping victory over SV Darmstadt on October 28, 2023.

Thomas Tuchel has in the past won the DFB-POKAL, guiding Borrusia Dortmund to the trophy in the 2016/17 season.
