Grammy winner Shakira has revealed that her ex, Gerard Pique, had a super-tense relationship with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
During Guardiola’s tenure as manager of Barcelona, Pique considered quitting Barcelona to return to Manchester United.
The Colombian singer revealed in court how not everything went well between Barcelona and his ex-partner Pique. She said, “Gerard had a rather complicated relationship with Barcelona.”
“With Guardiola, he had a super-tense relationship of ‘you go or I go’. It was a situation that made him suffer a lot. Despite the relationship, Pique stayed at Barcelona until Guardiola left in 2012.”
She also revealed that Luis Enrique told Pique that he would be sitting on the bench a lot. However, Pique ended up becoming a legend at the club.
Pique won a lot during his 14-year spell at Nou Camp. The center back made 675 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 54 goals.
The 36-year-old defender is one of the greatest to have ever played for Barcelona. He hanged his boot in November 2022, despite making just 10 appearances for Xavi Hernandez’s side.
His decision to hang up his boots saved Barcelona a whopping amount of £46 million due to the combination of high wages and deferred salary payments over recent years.
Pique’s retirement from the Barcelona squad was a result of the clash between him and Xavi Hernandez.
However, off the pitch, Pique and Shakira split after an 11-year relationship, five months before his retirement from football.
