Sergio Ramos is set for a dramatic return to La Liga after reaching a verbal agreement to re-join his boyhood club, Sevilla.
The former Spanish international defender is currently without a club, as his two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain ended at the end of last season.
Sergio Ramos snubs Al-Ittihad for Sevilla move
Sergio Ramos has decided to return to his childhood club, Sevilla, on a short-term agreement following his departure from PSG.
This choice was made despite receiving offers from Saudi team Al-Ittihad and various Turkish clubs.
Ramos has been strongly connected to a potential transfer to Saudi Pro League Al-Ittihad on a move that would have reunited him with his former Real Madrid teammate, Karim Benzema.
Even when it seemed likely that Ramos would join Al-Ittihad, the Spaniard decided to wait for an offer from Sevilla instead.
And that offer has finally arrived with Ramos set for a remarkable return to Sevilla.
According to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, a short-term contract agreement has been reached between Sergio Ramos and Sevilla.
Romano reported that Sevilla are preparing to officially announce Sergio Ramos as their new signing, following the agreement reached on Sunday, September 3.
The contract is set to run until June 2024, with an option for an additional season.
The Italian journalist added that Ramos will be included in the UCL list at the completion of his move to Sevilla.
Ramos’ primetime at Sevilla
The former Real Madrid and Spain International defender began his path to greatness at Sevilla.
Ramos spent his time at Sevilla between 1996 and 2005, steadily progressing and eventually establishing himself as one of the top defenders in La Liga.
The 37-year-old advanced through the academy at Sevilla, accumulating a total of 49 appearances for the senior team.
In 2005, he made a significant move to Real Madrid, with the transfer fee amounting to €27 million.
Ramos gained more recognition with Los Blancos, where he established his reputation as a veteran defender.
After a successful tenure in the Spanish capital, during which he secured 22 trophies with Real Madrid, Ramos left Los Blancos to join PSG on July 8, 2021.
Sergio Ramos is poised to become Sevilla’s ninth acquisition this summer, joining the likes of Loic Bade, Dodi Lukebakio, Djibril Sow, Mariano Diaz, Orjan Nyland, Adria Pedrosa, Rafael Romero, and Boubakary Soumare.
Sevilla are currently at the bottom of La Liga, as they have been unable to secure any points in their first three matches.
So far, they are the only club in the top flight in Spain that has not earned any points.
Hopefully, the Spanish Giants will bounce back to their winning form once Ramos sets in.
What’s next for Ramos?
The former PSG and Real Madrid star will undergo his medicals soon before finalizing a contract with the Spanish club.
